Wonder how I killed my computer

I've been having problems with my computer/video card crashing while playing BF2. Last night I ran memtest for 12+ hours without any errors. Today I just wanted to see if I still had a bad stick of ram (2X512). So I took out 1 of them and ran just 1. I did it with both. Then I tried putting both in the green slots. When I did that, the computer would not boot. So I tried just using 1, nothing. Tried the other, nothing. I grab some crappy stick from another computer and still nothing. I connected the D-Bracket next. All 4 lights stay lit up and that's where it stays. I tried resetting the CMOS and nothing still. I removed my watercooling from it and turned on the computer and the chip is actually kinda cold and if I leave the computer on, it never warms up. Plus the only way to turn off the computer is to pull the plug out of the PSU, the switch doesn't work. So, did I kill the mobo or the CPU? Either way I'm screwed because I'm overseas and ordering stuff takes 2-4 weeks to get here through the USPS since I have an APO address. And where I'm living, their computer stores consists of DOS games and 1 speaker headphones. Also, I don't think it's my PSU, because I hear my cdrom start up, all 5 fans start and so does the waterpump that's connected to the mobo.

Well I don't think that it's dead..I mean, it is starting up, and it sounds like your RAM just won't read. It is possible that you fried your RAM while changing them around though. Have you tried putting the RAM back in its original slots? Maybe the others are dead? I suppose it could be possible that you fried the Motherboard as well..but I'm not sure how to tell if you did, it's never happened to me before. Good Luck man

Is your mobo from MSI , I had the same kinda issues and it turned out to be a dud motherboard . RTM if you can.

try it in other slots, and were u wearing any static protection when changing them as you may of fried something

also boot it with cd-rom drives out and no hard drive just to see if it does still boot.

Did you knock out a plug some where (ive done that) :laugh:

Also when i biult my comp i fried the mobo but luckily the shop changed it, they are surprisingly easy to fry!!!:wall:

That sux, I had a similar problem.. ended up my mobo had fried somehow.
Luckily I had an identical computer I could swap ram / cpu / ps out of for testing.

your best bet is to disconnect everything and pull the mobo out - lay it out on a non-static mobo bag if you have one or maybe something like cardboard. Inspect it, then start adding only the most basic components and see what happens. from the sound of it I would guess mobo

my tip is invest in a £5 anti static device and it will save you £100s of pounds

The computer wont even get out of the first stage of initialization. I guess with all mobos you can do this, but mine comes with a D Bracket that hooks up to the mobo and the lights tell you what stage of boot the computer is in. Well mine doesn't even get out of the first stage. The first stage is recognizing the cpu, next is the chipset initialization, and 3rd is memory initialization. So I only have the cpu in and the 2 power wires connected and that's it. So it should make it to step 3 but once again it doesn't even make it out of step one. I took off the watercooling and left the computer "on" and the CPU doesn't even get warm, it stays cold. So I'm pretty sure it's the mobo. Well either that or the chip. Neither looks damaged either. Either way I'm buying a new cpu, mobo, and ram. Probably a dual core AMD so it's not a total lose.

I think you killed yout mobo. You must disconnect power cord before any remove/insert, because the ATX PSU gives power all the time.

mobo sounds dead,,strip it to core and see if you get a post... do you get beeps with the ram out and it powered on? if not, it's a dead mobo
