jimmy, there's a diference but whether or not you're willing to spend the extra dough on it, is up to you. Raptors are significantly more expensive and tons of people have them. I mean just go to any tech forum and look at people signatures. But, like I said whether or not the diference is worth the extra $100 is another issue.

You should know as well as I that many people will spend money on things just to have the biggest and best, whether or not there is in fact a diffrence. Just because people are buying them doesn't mean they are really any better than anyting else. It just comes down to an internet big penis competition.

I haven't noticed a huge increase in performance. I have 2 in a RAID 0 configuration, and I would have to say that load times, and things to that nature aren't that much faster. The only time I can tell is when I am moving large files to/from my file server (which is downstairs).

RAID 0 slows down load times.

No need for Raptors...Not worth it at all. No improvement in gameplay or load times in games.

How do you figure? All it does is create 1 large drive, it doesn't effect anything else. Storage capacity, or spindle speed, as both drive operate independently of one another.

Well, it's 2 needles reading now instead of 1. But that doesn't always show significant results. Just like SLi doesn't double your FPS or Dual Channel ram doesn't double the speed. For games RAID isn't that significant but it makes a difference for other things.

It's a real good deal for 250GB of hard drive space. Plus, it has faster reponse times than any SATA 150 hard drive i can find except for the raptors. If you don't have SATA connnectors, you can't get the Raptors as well, so people stop argureing about the Raptors. If you are still using IDE, then get the first one that toxikneedle put on. ANd for your info on RAID. I see not all people know much.
NOTE: to run RAID, you need all the hard drives to be of the same storage size. Example, two 250GB hard drives. You CAN have two different sizes, but then you're wasting money.

RAID 0: Decreases loading times and makes acessing data real fast, you simply do this, for everything you install on your comp, it splits it in half, one half goes to drive #1, the other half goes to drive #2. So instead of acessing one drive the normal speeds, you access two drives, so it makes it twice as fast. Problems, one drive dies, you have half a program, so that sux.

RAID 1: It does data mirroring for data reliability. It copies every thing you install on your computer, and puts that copy into the other drive. The problem, lets say you have two 80 GB hard drives in Raid 1, you only realistically have a 80 GB hard drive, but if one drive dies, you still have all your data.

RAID 10: THis is the best one, it combines the benefits of Raid0 and Raid1.It tears the program in half, each half is copied, so you have 4 half programs, 2 for each half. The problems, it's gonna take you 4 hard drives, but if one drive dies, you still have your data, if another one dies, then you might or might not Depending on if the second hard drive that died, was holding the same half program as the first one that died. So this is the best, but note, if u use 4 250GB hard drives, you only realistically have 500GB of hard drive space, but yet again, it's the best Raid configuration possible.

Actually raid 5 is better than 10, but 5 is not readily available on desktop boards.

Sorry to go off topic.. but what are your quick opinions to SCSI hard drives? as far as gaming, load up, etc.

Not worth it. SCSI is much better suited for high-end server use.

Dont bother with SCSI for desktops.

Samsung Spinpoints are the flavor of month at the moment. The data density is really high and this helps as it increases MB/s output.
