    AGP 4x on an 8x card

    Hi, my 6600GT has been giving me very undstable performance and windows related errors ever since I installed it and I was wondering.

    1) My card is AGP 8x and my Mobo is AGP 2.0 (2x/4x) compliant. Could this be the reason behind my sub-par performance and errors?

    2) If so, should I upgrade my mobo to something with AGP 8x or should I spring for an actual 8x/4x card? I've seen many high end ATI cards that are AGP 2.0 comliant but no high end Nvidia cards that are. Is there such thing as a 8x/4x 6800GT for example?

    Thx so much, I kinda post excesively on this hardware forum but I'm slowly learning. believe me.

    *EDIT*
    I also upgraded my PSU from a 300w to a 420w so I don't belive that is the problem.

    (i tried to search but couldn't find anything)

    Your motherboard is only getting it at half the speeds it should, 4x instead of 8x so that is causing less performance.

      Is it an actual %50 decrease in performance? I thought the only difference was the voltage?

        Actually the diference isnt by 50%. There might be no diference at all. AGP cards don't max out on 8x AGP bandwidth. Most just reach enough for 4x. It's complicated but even if there is any performance loss... it shouldn't be too high. I'd say AT MOST like 5fps. I had a 9700pro back in the day and it kept freezing @ 8x, I set it to 4x and was actually even to OC it more because it wasn't overheating as much and I got a performance boost.

          No it's bandwith, voltage has nothing to do with it.

            Hmm, theres still something I don't get though. If AGP x8 cards work on x4 slots, then how come some cards say "AGP x8/x4" on the box and specs and mine for instance says "x8"?

              If ure mobo is in x4 and ure card is x8, go into ure bios settings and simply change ure card to x4, that might help

                Well, if a 8x AGp card is twice as good as a 4x AGp, PCI-e would rock AGPs world, that's just like saying my X800XL is better than yours because yours is AGP, mine is twice as good, even though you payed the same price. Right now there's almost no difference, but there's going to be, plus they're going to stop making AGp cards soon 7800series don't have AGP, or not yet at least.

                  the difference between 4 and 8 is so littel you wouldnt even know and pci-e as of now has not a single thing over sgp besides sli. so eddy im starting to think you have no idea what you are talking about.

                    The difference is about 5-10%

                    AGP 2.0 is a 1.5V AGP slot capable of 4x,2x and 1x speeds.
                    AGP 3.0 is a 0.8V AGP slot capable of 8x speeds.

                      What i said is that the difference between AGP and PCI-e is negligible, i kinda worded it confusingly. Read the last sentance of my post.

                        Well I'm running at 1024x768, mostly medium settings, except for dynamic shadows off and dynamic lighting "low" and 2x AA and 4x AF. I have a 6600GT (as said earlier), P4 2.5 Ghz, and 1.5 Gb of RAM. My friend has similar specs, with a slightly better proccesor (P4 2.6 Ghz) but only 1 Gb or RAM and he says he can run BF2 with no visible lag and higher FPS then me WITH higher AA and AF.... Right now I'm getting sometimes below 20 FPS at the worst times but an average of below 30 when doing any other fighting. Are my settings too good for my system dispite my friend is supposedly fine running with his? I'm just wondering if my standards are too high since my AGP probly isn't the big issue as discussed in the ladder.

                          The difference is how fast the information flows from card, to motherboard, and vice versa. Now some people will say "no games reach 8x AGP bandwidth yet" which is true, but compare it to a highway.

                          While the highway may not be at what is considered a maximum capacity, cars may have to travel slower on it. But if you widen that same highway, you increase capacity, and not only that but the same amount of cars will be able to travel faster.

                          Minute jump? Yes, but its the same hardware under different interfaces. The cost difference is nill as well, so why not get better performance if you can?

                            Not really the same hardware, I would imagine the HSI interface on the AGP version is what slowed it down a bit. Not to mention the 6600gt is PCI-e native. If you took a card that was AGP native and tested it aginst it's PCI-e port the AGP would probably scorehigher.
