new CPU? or more MEMORY?

well guys, here are the specs of rig..... nothing to fabulous....

AMD Athlon64 939socket @1.8GHz
ABIT AN8-SLI mobo
1Gb Kingston PC32oo RAM - 2 sticks of 512
BFG NVidia GeForce 7800GT OC 256mb
400Watt PSU

i never have the SAME BF2 experience... most of the time it takes me like 10 min to START the game... i play on medium-high graphics and sometimes its excelent, other times i cant go 3 seconds w/out a lag or something... It takes forever to join a server... and it seems like all of these happen at different times.... like i said, NEVER the SAME experience.

So, do i need to up my CPU? or do i need more Memory? or am i completely off at those two ideas...?

You should be running BF2 on ultra high, cause you have a 7800GT. Try using it non overclocked, see how it runs, BF2 hates overclocking. And 1gb should be sufficient, your Proccessor is a bit on the value side, I don't think you need to upgrade, i think there's a problem with the system.

Whats your budget?

From just looking at that i would reccomend more RAM.

Ok, overclock your processor and buy more ram to make 2GB.

i WISH i could use ultra high settings.

ummm how do i UN-overclock my GPU? can i do it through the NVidia settings? or do i need a program.

i TRIED overclocking my CPU.... i got it to like 1.9GHz, but it was running at 50 degrees Celsius. BUT idunno if i did it right, all i did was go into the BIOS and change the FSB? to 215, rather than 200mHz.....im prolly wrong, but i AM n00b at tweaking computers

With that video card, you really need a higher end CPU in order to use it's full capability. 1GB of RAM is adequate but the real bottleneck in your system is the CPU.

not necessarily because AMDs perform very well with gaming, expecially 64. You should be able to go on high. End of story

Now in response to the original question.

Even today's best processors bottleneck the 7800 series cards.

For optimal performance you need both 2 GB's of memory, and a faster processor.

Which model is your processor? 3000+??

If I were you I'd upgrade the processor first, and get the memory later.

It really depends on how much money you have to spend, the memory will most likely end up being cheaper than a new processor, so go for what you can afford.

Either upgrade will increase your performance.

You have a good motherboard, and a good video card, and your memory isn't bad either. You just need a faster processor and twice as much memory for optimal performance.

Again, go for what you can afford.
