Could somebody who knows about routers help me here. I ran a ping test and as you can see there are anomolies.



Before I thought that it was loss that caused my periodic bouts of lag (causing me to be 3m away from where I was or heading for the ocean rather than cruising forwards).

OK you havnt made it clear what the problem is but it certanly doesnt look like your router. check for programs running in the background using the internet and check for other pc's on the network.

Ok sorry. My problem is that I get period sessions in online games where I'm going along and then I'll be back where I was a second ago or I'll be 5m to the side. I ran a ping test and thats what I got. What I would like is for somebody who knows about routers to suggest something to help me sort the problem.

The problem that you have is called "LAG" nothing to do with your router as long as you have all the latest firmware and drivers for it from the manufacturers web site.
Assuming you have the above for your router first off how are you connecting to the game server of your choice by "playnow" or "multyplayer" and what ping is recorded in the multyplayer box you are connecting to?
Also when posting a TECH question please "always" post a full rig / pc specification to help with a diagnosis.

In the pic he is pinging what I assume to be his router (private IP address); there is no reason he should get the random high pings he is sporadically getting.

The "anomolies" you see there could be because the router cannot handle all of the ping requests right in a row. This may cause the router to temporarily stop responding to avoid a ping flood and packet overflow (which is a common way for hackers to enter a network).

OK thanks for the comments guys. My internet is 2MB British Telecom and the router is wireless.

1GB DDR RAM
256MB nVidia 5950 Ultra AGP
3.0GHz Pentium 4
250GB Maxtor HDD

You are correct lil_kimmy, that is the test I am running.

@ KingOfKhaos - Ok, so if that's what the problem is, how can I change it, it's ruining my online gaming...
