24 pin Power Supplies

I have just got my new rig (see below)but the mobo has a 24 pin power conector on it. I know I can still use a 20 pin, but what I was wondering was will my system be stable. The psu is 550 watts but its nothing special. Also do the 20 - 24 pin converters work or should I just buy a new psu....

Bearing in mind I just spent over £700 on this rig............Grrrrrrrrrr

It may be stable using just the 20 connector if you have enough amperage at the +12V rail. The additional 4 pins simply add more connections of the same voltage for extra stability.

The 20 to 24 pin converters work pretty well if you have a dual +12V power rail but tend to degrade the +12V rail fairly quickly (in about 2 months) on a PSU with just a single +12V rail. The same applies to using only the 20 pin connector.

You really should invest in a new PSU in order to protect the £700 you have already invested on the rig if your PSU is single line.

I used a 24 to 20 pin converter for a while without any trouble, but decided to switch to a new PSU w/24 pins and dual 12V rails. I just don't feel safe using adapters. Although I didn't actually have any trouble.

i run my mobo on a 20 pin when its meant to be 24 and its fine. but u can buy one of these that ive tried

I would say your best bet would be to invest in a new power supply. Get one with a 24-pin connector and make sure the +12V rail/s have at least 18 amps.

Chears guys, I think I will just go for a decent PSU. I havent wired this baby up yet and I dont want to fry anything. The system I'm using now is too slow and I cant wait to get this new one running. Old specs.... AMD 2400xp. 1 gig of ram. 6600gt agp

I run my system with a 20 with a 24pin connection on the mobo. No problems. My 12v is still strong.

you could get a good psu for 60-100 dollars. Mine came with a 20 pin connector and a extra 4 pins on a different plug. So it was like a combo psu.
