AMD Athlon 64 X2 question

I'm helping a friend with a upgrade and he asked if AMD's X2's can work on the nforce3 ultras/mobos (cause he doesnt want to sell his 6600GT AGP) that support s939 + AGP and I am personally not sure. I said probably not, 'cause I heard it was a nforce4-thing only. So...can a X2 work on a s939 with AGP, or I gotta tell him you need a entirely new system?

Any links to prove it (cause my friend doesnt believe me lol ) would be more than grateful. Thanks~

The socket has to be 939, and it should work. He may have to flash his BIOS to add support for the X2 chip (for it to properly recognize it).

But if he is going to get a dual core, then might as well go all out, or it will bottleneck.

O_o ok cool. I told him about bottlenecking...but his logic is once he gets enough money from working, upgrade again to his ultimate system he has in mind, transfering his X2 cpu to his newer system thats SLI-based.

It would work, and isn't a bad route to go really. The 3800+ is plenty enough, but if he wants to go faster that is up to him.

dual core is only any usful you intend to do 2 things at once i recommend a FX AMD my mate bought one and i think it will go like stink when he gets it!!!

The FX is $800+ though...tell him to get a 3800+ or a 4000+ instead of an X2 if he is isn't using processor intensive programs.

Well, he told me he wants to use it for Windows Vista mainly. Seems to be a good idea I think.

Prices f/ newegg: X2 3800+ = 379 USD (saw a deal at a local store for 360); standard 4000+ san diego core = 368 (380 at a local store).

I'm thinking why not X2, for a few bucks more, have a second actual CPU and be prepared for most future games...but a 4000+ might be just what he needs. *thinks about it some more*

Edit: He is a gamer so he does use processor intensive programs...

Windows Vista is 18months away, its a bit early to upgrade for something that is that far away. X2's are only worth it if you want to do video encoding or run 2 processor intensive things at the same time.

It will be ages before games will be 64bit and utilise dual cores....and even then it probably wont be worth it as games are becoming more and more gfx card intensive.

A few MSDN members already have the Beta of Vista. The only diffrence between an Athlon 64 and an Athlon FX is that the FX has unlocked multipliers. I would personally go for the X2 because so many people are oblivious to how many processes they truely are running on their system. Example: A virus scanner and a video game. Whala, you have two intensive processes running already. Dual core may not make a big difference for gaming now with current OS's but that does not mean it would not make a difference in a more optimized operating system that is truely designed around modern technology.

stick with a 3500+ they are still capible of doing the job, VISTA hasnt had what it will require pc wise confirmed yet so just upgrade it to run a pc well.

If you can play BF2 on high or ultra high it will run vista with no problems!!!

By the time Vista comes out however, there will be many new technologies, such as hybrid HDDs that have 1 gig of onboard flash memory. There will probably be a new iteration of SATA, two new generations of Graphics cards, 2 gigs of DDR2 RAM will be standard, there will be an nForce 5 or 6 motherboard chipset, processors will have more than two cores, most likely 4.

If I were you, I'd tell your buddy to make a machine that can run XP well, and then start saving up for a kick-arse machine for when Vista comes out. That's what I'm going to do anyways.

Good advice AT39. Besides I doubt there would be any current improvements to running Battlefield 2 on Vista over XP.
