EAX doesn't work in multiplayer

Whenever I use EAX in singleplayer offline mode, it works fine and great. EAX makes the sounds much better.
But when I go online, the EAX causes a lot of stuttering sounds. It's weird. Any idea what's going on?

I have a 2.8 ghz, 1 gig RAM, Radeon 9800 pro, Hercules MuseXL soundcard system. Also, keeping VOIP turned on causes quite a bit of frame rate loss. I really like VOIP, so I'd like to keep it on. Should I upgrade my RAM or is my system just crappy all around? Will upgrading it to 1.5 gigs of RAM be good enough? Because that's my most efficient upgrade choice if I do upgrade...

v1.03 thats all I can say, turn it off for now, as it doesn't even work online technically, something with the code is screwed up.
