Okay this may sound odd, but I need YOUR help this time.

Here is the deal, I'm looking to get a laptop (notebook) for school. Bare in mind this DOES NOT have to be an uber machine, just something for school, word processing, internet, not much more then that (like, no gaming, or anything like that).

First off is 256mb of RAM enough? I've always been a stong believe in 512, but if 256 is enough then great.

Other then that, who do you recommend? I'm thinking about Dell (the only thing I'd every buy from them is a laptop, lol). But if I don't go with Dell, then who? I also had my eye on an HP Pavillion dv1310 here:

I have a Dell, about 3 years old and it has a 1600x1200 15.1" screen, still to this day many laptops don't have this high resolution.

I would suggest you get one with high resolution for more desktop space, unless you like scrolling.
Depends on your preference of course not all like small text (or rather small to them)

I would probably buy Dell again if I were to get one today (or Alienware).
When i used my laptop it was as replacement for my regular PC so it was for gaming also. The nice thing about Dell laptops are that most of them are modular, meaning that it isn't that hard to change e.g. gfx card or other piece of hardware.

I would get 512 MB RAM ar least, better to have more than less. The good thing about XP is that it runs okay even if processor is rather slow, but has amble RAM.

If you get 256 MB RAM now and are going to upgrade later, make sure that it one 256 MB stick, so you later can upgrade with another 256, if you don't specify they will probably put two 128 MB RAM sticks in it and fill both RAM slots.

In short, you won't go wrong with a Dell, it might not always best price, but I like the quailty. Dells are a lot cheaper now than 3 years ago, today they have to be more competetive, because they aren't the only ones with high-end laptops anymore. Today the best laptop from Dell probably cost 2/3 or 1/2 of what I paid for a high-en laptop then.

I would go with a dell laptop if I were you. Not for PC's ever, but for a latop they are preety good considering my brother has had no problems yet with his XPS generation 2

I think I may just get it from my friend at Best Buy....I'm good with computers, so I don't need tech support or any of that crap.

Thats good, also make sure you can put BF1942 on it. I played that during study hall quite a few times.

Haha, no no, I really need to focus on school, so I made a choice.

I am going to get one from Best Buy, because its cheaper, and faster.
