5.1 headphones?

Anybody have any opinions on these? Any real life experience? I've read some reviews online, but they all come across as product endorsements more than a good balanced review. I'd like to hear from people who have actually tried them and compared 'm to a regular speaker setup (2/4.1/5.1 etc)

I bought a pair of Gainward 5.1 headphones for a laugh. To be honest I didnt laugh.. waste of £30/£40. The sound was to tinney and lacking base.

Get a nice pair of Sennheisers then your talking (well listening).

Sorry to hear it was a waste for you. How about the surround effect? Does it really work? Or is there not much of a difference between 5.1 and regular plain old stereo head phones?

I have a pair of LTB 5.1 headphones I bought off of www.newegg.com and they rock. They have 3 speakers in each ear, and the range of sound is great for a $50 headset. I never have any problem telling where the tank or choppers (or soldiers) are coming from. You just have to get used to them, but once you do its like second nature. The mic is ultra clear too.

I have the Zallman 5.1 surround sound headphones. They're awesome. Surround sound works perfect. I can crank up the volume without bothering the rest of the family. Also, very comfortable. Would not go back to speakers.

i have the Creative 5.1 headphones. they work ok, the 5.1 is nothing great. regular sound is pretty good though. you can hear which direction some stuff is coming from. the headset is not adjustable though, so if you have a small head, it might not fit too well. this is the standard headphone and mic jacks. $70 i think from ebuyer. don't buy from ebuyer though, 95% of the stuff they sell, they won't take back if you don't like it or it doesn't even work. shitty ass company if you ask me.

i also have the Tritton Audio Thunder or Thunder Audio (forget which way it is). These are USB, have adjustable headset and mic, very well built, comes with some kind of little box that you can use to adjust volume and stuff. works ok for 5.1. you can hear stuff from different directions but still not all that great. good sound though. also has inline volume control to adjust left right, front, back, etc. had problems using these with the game. my movement would lock up when i used them. i haven't used them recently but i think i got it so that doesn't happen anymore but don't remember how i did it. these were about $70 also from tiger direct.

i just got a pair of sennheiser hd555 headphones. no mic, just regular stereo headphones. these seem to work pretty good. they were about $110 off ebay (brand new). retail is about $150. i guess i'm not much of an audiophile because between these 3 heapdhones, i can't really tell a difference.

I have Altec Lansing headphones, they were $40, but they're not 5.1, however they have excellent noise isolation, i mean, you can't hear any noise at all (no scratchy fuzzy noises) sounds just like speakers, and it also has really good bass. I have 5.1 speakers but because i dont want to ruin the speakers further, or annoy my family, i use these headphones and i love em. It also comes witha really nice microphone.

I have the Medusa 5.1 Headset [with mic], and I absolutely LOVE this headset! It is by far the most rugged, and best working headset I've owned, and believe me I have quite a pile of junked headsets in my garage.. They are kinda pricey at about $100, but you can't get a better headset in my opinion, let alone one that has actual 5.1 Surround Sound.

5.1 headphones are a pile of shit, i tested some and they were really bad they were made by creative and cost about £80 new. They lacked bass tone and any real volume.

Just to clarify...

I have pretty decent headphones now, but they're plain stereo headphones. When i just use my speakers, the surround effect is much better, because i actually have speakers in front and behind of course. So i'm curious about surround headphones. I know that some headphones are better than others in terms of sound quality (sounding tinny, not enough bass etc), but that's true for stereo and surround headphones. So while i appreciate you guys letting me know which ones sound good and which ones don't in your opinion, i'm mainly curious how the surround sound is with 5.1 headphones. How does it compare to a surround speakers setup? Does it work? Does it work well? Or is it more of a gimmick and are you better off with speakers if you're after surround sound?

I have Zalman 5.1 phones and they really do work! Excellent for games although they are not exactly Ultra HiFi for music! What they really need is an attached mic boom for VOIP but then my Audigy 2 cannot seem to do VOIP .... so who cares?
The separation is not quite as good as my Creative Inspire 5.1 speakers but the 3 speakers in each earpiece do deliver spatially separated, surround sound. There is no woofer of course so hence the complaint that they lack bass! I cannot say I notice this at all in the gaming environment! They play music adequately although I have better stereo phones purely for music.
A method of quick swap would be nice for all of us who connect via rear mounted jack sockets!!!
Cannot fault them for gaming! When I first got them I had a persistent neck tic from hearing assassins creeping up behind me in various SP Shooter games!!

Just like to add my final reason for using them is NEIGHBOURS!!!
I often play very late at night and the 5.1 speakers were causing big problems!
Despite the fact the wonderful people next door have a fat son who murders an electric guitar at all hours (he has not got one bit better in 10 years!!!!!) They seemed to object to surround sound firefights at 3 in the morning! Go figure!?

I have a pair of Tritton 5.1 Headphones. They sound amazing. They have 8 independent speakers in the headphones plus it even has a cool vibration effect with the bass...definatly wakes you up when the artillery starts landing! They have their own seperate USB attachment so they don't even use your jacks for your other speakers...pretty cool if you dont wanna be swithing your cords for the headphones and the speakers all the time.

Sound is great, and the price was like 75 bucks on newegg. Check the reviews there too.

I just picked these up the other day and they great . Id have to agree with you about the bass at first . Then i realized you just have to go into your audio options for your card and crank up the bass and treble . Now im getting that low sub bass sound i like in movies,games ect . Another thing i tested was the fact even in 5.1 not all the speakers work . I had to go into my creative setup and change the CMSS 3D Selection to "Stereo Surround" to get them all working . Besides that these are a great pair of suround headphones if your on a budget since im not paying 150$cnd for a pair of medusas .
