    Upgrade RAM?

I originally made my computer about 2.5 years ago and I've already upgraded the graphics card from a GF4 Ti4400 to a X800 XT, but I am still unhappy with its performance. I was thinking of upgrading the RAM. Here are my system specs.

MB: Epox 4SDA5+ (SiS 648 chipset)
    CPU: Pentium 4 2.53ghz (533mhz FSB)
    RAM: 3 x DDR 256mb PC2100 (768 mb total @ 2.5, 2, 3, 6 timings)
    Vid: Connect3d X800 XT 256mb (AGP 8x)
    HD: Seagate 40gb (5,400 RPM)

    I was thinking of upgrading to 3 sticks of DDR 512mb PC2100 ram for a total of 1.5gb. My MB only supports 2 sticks @ PC2700 (333 mhz) or 3 sticks @ PC2100 (266mhz)
*EDIT* Would getting 1 stick of 1gb ram and keeping 2 sticks of the 256 mb ram for a total of 1.5 gb work?, if so which slot should I put in the 1gb ram? */EDIT*

Would increasing the RAM translate into better FPS & quality in game?

Yes it should increase the FPS. You'd have to check the mobo support per slot, most will support a 1GB stick. As for the slot, again it depends, some mobos require you to have the largest in the main, others it won't matter, my guess is it wont' matter which you put it in.

Wow, that RAM is quite slow and 768MB is probably hurting too.
I would go 2x512@PC2700 but even still I would not expect great performance.
Only get 1GB sticks if your board supports them.

My MB does support 1gb sticks

I ordered 1 stick of PQI 1GB PC3200 from newegg, Ill try and see if my MB will let me run at 400 mhz otherwise Im stuck at 333mhz, but besides, there was no PC2700 1GB sticks from a major brand that were cheaper.

Anyways anyone have any suggestions to increase my fps? I'm running on Cat 5.8 drivers, and I went through the BF2 tweak guide at tweakguides.com, and I've set my AGP Aperature to 256mb, but I still get 30-40 fps @ Medium Detail w/ 4x AA and I was expecting better from a X800 XT.

          Re: Upgrade RAM?

Well obviously the X800 XT is bottlenecked by the ram and cpu, I guess the cpu isn't that bad it's just the ram. Once you get the 1 gig stick it should start running way better.

I myself would have just got 512mb of RAM, I think bf2 at max uses around 1.3-1.3gigs. With an extra 512mb you would have all you really need right now, but I mean everyone seems to like having lots of ram even when they don't seem to really need it. Having a little over 1 gig is good but any more than that I am pretty sure won't do much.

I'm thinkin about jumpin from cas 2.5 no-brand name ram to OCZ 2GB Ultra Performance... Not sure if it'll make a difference, but we'll see.
