    Bf2 vey greedy game!

I have previously posted in this forum regarding my problems with BF2 and the screen & sound freezes or lagging behaviour which spoiled my enjoyment of the game!

I recently increased my RAM amount from 1 to 2 gigs which has eliminated the bad behaviour. It would seem Bf2 is just a very very greedy game!!

My failure in getting my new RAM to ADD to the existing 1 Gig may be of interest to others with similar hardware!

My hardware of relevance is CPU: Prescott 3.2GHz (1Mb F2) Mainboard: MSI i875P rev 2 Canterwood chipset. Graphics card: Creative nVidia Geforce FX 5950 Ultra. Sound Card: Creative Audigy 2. RAM: originally Corsair TwinX 1024-PC3200LLPT replaced with Corsair TwinX 2048-PC3200C2PT.

Boy am I glad I had enough mula to buy 2 gigs of RAM!!!!!

As far as using all 4 slots in my MSI 875 DUAL CHANNEL mainboard ... its a NO GO!
PC performance plummeted and Oh Boy! Am I glad I got 2 gigs instead of another 2x 512 DIMMs!!!

The system rocks with either my original Corsair TwinX 1024-3200LLPT (2x512Mbs) or the new TwinX 2048-3200C2PT (2x1024Mbs) but not both sets together!!

The stated timings of the new pair were as close as I could get to my original of 2.3.2.6 . The new set being 2.3.3.6. I believe however that even if the 2 sets were identical I would still have had problems. The chipset just does not seem to like having all 4 slots filled!
When all 4 slots were filled, Memory speed was very degraded with Clockgen showed Memory values in the 130s instead of the expected 200+. It usually shows the same as the FSB value about 210+ with PAT and higher with the other BIOS tweaks running!! Although dual channel mode was supposed to be maintained the CPU performance was below the 3.2GHz level. With one or other of the TwinX sets installed 3.5 Ghz CPU values were easily obtained with combinations of PAT (Mem set to Spd) plus the MAT & DOT overclocking BIOS settings. FSB and MEMORY values came back into alignment with ClockGen values of 219+ for both.

So no 3 Gig system but a healthy 2Gig one! Battlefield 2 now runs as it should with all video set on HIGH at 1024x768@100Hz and even at 1280x964@100Hz!!! No freezing, sound stutters or lags! No more squeezing the trigger on an anti-tank weapon to see it stop a few “virtual feet” from your eyes, just as the fins deploy, while the sound loops about 40 times!!!

Oh! and .................. anyone want to buy one Gig of killer DDR400 Corsair TwinX PC3200LLPT now sadly surplus to requirements!!?????

There's no way you play maxed settings with a 5950 Ultra, so I'm going to call ********.

AT 1024x768@100Hz and all video settings on high (except antialiasing) I get perfectly good gameplay! AT 1280x960 the vid card is definately overstressed and there is slowdown and occasional jerkyness but as I say at 1024 its fine!

yeah i call bs on the vid card on max but you tell an interesting story with the ram setup

Im running 1540mb (1 generic 2x 512 rambo 3200 ddr) in single channel and im getting ass performance. I might give 1024 @ dual channel and see what happens

              thanks for posting your experience!

                Re: Bf2 vey greedy game!

What do you guys call "unplayable"?
Using FRAPS I get from 17 to 32FPS at 1024x768 rez and refresh 100Hz. This is with all settings on HIGH except antialiasing which is set to ZERO!
FPS goes as low as 17 but always in scenic panning shots! IE not while I am inside the character and actually playing! While playing (shooting, dying, driving tank etc) the fps is in the low 20s usually!
I find this perfectly playable! Although anyone wanting to donate me a new SLI 7800GTX system is welcome!
If it was donated FREE I might even break the habit of a lifetime and go the "emulation route" and accept an AMD Athlon 64!!! Only if it were free mind you!!

I will never buy ATI products again after early bad experiences with them!!
