I currently have 2x512MB running in dual channel mode. I am going to upgrade to 2GB and have a question. Is it worth scrapping the 2 512's and going with 2 1GB modules in dual channel or is the difference negligible enough that I should just keep the 2x512 and get two more 512s and run 2GB without the dual channel? I have 1X512 and was going to add a 1x1 Gb (total 1.5GB), I opted for buying 2x512, it's cheaper (saved like 50$) and I doubt you'll notice the difference...but then again...I'm no techie.

I've seen this answered before... 4x512mb dual channel works better than 2x1gb dual channel... someone please confirm...

hmm.. I thought my motherboard A7N8X-E had 4 slots, two of which could be used for Dual Channel, I'll have to go take another look.
*edit* You were right. However it has 3 slots so I guess my option is to get a single 1GB DIMM.

But that's just me. The only latency really matters is when you've got 1 stick. Maybe 2 in dual-channel. Otherwise, latency gives way to better resource mangement all around.

If he only has 3 slots, his system BIOS probably won't support dual-channel. Dual-Channel setups always have 2 banks of 2 slots each.

not always, i've seen a number of mobos built for manufactured systems which have 3 slots, 2 of them being DC..
Asus make a mobo for Fujitsu Siemens that does exactly this..

he has 4 slots, because he wants to add 2 more 512's to his current config or 2 512's. You also can have 4 sticks and have them running as 2 dual channel banks. Atleast with the board I have. I have 2 1gig dual channel kits (2x512ea) and they run as 2 dual channel channels. Rather redundant isn't it. For example: DIMM A1+DIMM A2 is channel A and DIMM B1+DIMM B2 is channel B. Which motherboard do you have anyways?

It's an ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe. It actually has 3 slots and says you can populate all 3 and run dual channel. Now my question is will running 512 in two of the slots and 1 GB in the third mess things up? Do they need to be the same memory amount in dual channel?

I'd like to take a moment to suggest 1gb sticks.
I have a Fx55 clawhammer that wont run 4 x 512mb matched sticks properly. The 4 sticks only run @ 2t and even then only show up as 1gb in windows. Bios updates and settings did not remedy the problem.
They were four indentical 512mb sticks of Gskill pc4400 gble (tccd). I ended up replacing them with 2 x 1gb ocz pc3200.
I posted my issue in a few forums and found at least 4 or 5 other people who experienced the same exact issue, but on different motherboards and a64 core revisions.
It's a limitation of some a64 memory controllers, they have issues running 4 double sided sticks of memory. It's too many banks. The newer cores are supposed to remedy the situation, but Im gun shy now and would rather just avoid the pontential hassle and go with 1gb sticks since they are reasonably priced now.
I prefer low latency memory on an a64 rather than high bus speeds with looser timings. The a64 isnt starved for bandwidth, so lower latency is a better solution imo.
The ocz 2x1gb kit has good timings @ 2/3/2/5 1T.
