Finally got my X800 XL + PSU and........

With that memory and CPU the effect of a new videocard is very veyr small.

i recently upgraded from Xp 2400+ and 512 DDr400, to nForce 3 mobo, Athlon 64 3000+, and 1gb (soon to be 2) DDR400, and it was great. This was before BF2, but it runs beautifully. Some on high, med, and AA on. view 100%.

Radeon 9800 Pro too. Does the job great.

Thanks a bunch for the replies... today I'll try to tweak around and see if I can get it so that every game doesn't stutter so much.

Drivers, man drivers. Have you made sure you have uninstalled the 9800Pro Drivers, and then installed the new catalyst drivers. And after you install the drivers, update them to cat 5.7s online, if they are still 5.6. And if that doesn't make it work, get a sticka ram. A CPU Oced to 2ghz that's AMD should definetly do it, that's the equivelent to a 3000+ or a 3200+ depending on the sockets, it's definetly not the CPU, might be the MOBO tho.

Well... this is actually how I installed the video card:

-Uninstalled everything related to ATI via Control Panel
-Downloaded Catalyst 5.7 drivers (so that I could install them after putting the card in)
-Shut down PC
-Took out 9800 PRO
-Installed power supply + video card
-Turned on PC
-Installed 5.7 Catalysts
-Restarted PC
-Tested if it detected the X800 XL as the new card - it did.
-Played Battlefield 2 - ran like crap; Played Half-Life 2 - ran like crap; Played FEAR - ran better than my 9800 PRO but stuttered like crazy.

I also downloaded and ran 3dmark2005 and I got a score of 4653... is this pretty good?

Chubz.. what kinda ram do you have and what speed, a gig would help tremendously for the effects, especially for loading maps. Fast hard drives help for that as well..

Well, to be honest I have 2 PCs, but I'm just able to use one now. (Parents are divorced if you want an explanation).

As for the PCs...

First one (the one I'm frustrated with):
AMD Athlon 2500+
768MB PC2700 RAM
ATI Radeon 9800 PRO (before X800 XL)

Second one (will try installing it in this one as well):
AMD Athlon 2800+
1GB PC2700 RAM
ATI Radeon 9600 XT

That's why I asked about the 2800+ and 1 GB of RAM... because that's in my second PC, so I'll try installing it in that one as well and see if it performs better.

Im very curious to what exactly your video settings are in the game.

1024x768; All Medium; 2x AA - I tried this and I get 50 FPS IF IM LUCKY, and an average of 30-40 FPS. This is unacceptable, because my 9800 PRO ran it just as good.

I also tried.....
1024x768; All High; 2x AA - This gave me like 30 FPS max, and I was getting an average of 20-25 FPS. This was a tad bit better than my 9800 PRO, but still VERY unacceptable after seeing what other people have been getting from their X800 XL's ....

I have a 3200+, 2gb pc3200 ram, msi 6800 ultra, and get 50+ on maxed settings, but even when theres like 5 guys shooting at me AND artillery, my fps will drop to 25-30 but i don't even notice it unless i look at the FPS, because it doesn't studder or have any screen lag.

That's the problem.. my parents are divorced and so this is the only one available to me.

BUT.... I just picked up the second rig and I'm about to install the PSU and Video Card into the better one. (AMD 2800+ XP, 1GB RAM).

Then if you do get enough...all you need is about 220 bucks...then you could get an Athlon 64 and a new mobo :)

Update:
I just installed both the PSU and X800 XL into the PC with an AMD Athlon 2800+ XP processor and 1 GB RAM, and games are definetely running better now.

I tried playing the FEAR single-player demo and although it did stall at some spots for a few seconds, I found the remedy to this problem - I had to lower the graphics settings just a tad bit. Now, the problem is fixed.

I tried FarCry as well, and even at 1280x1024, All High, the game ran anywhere from 40-70+ FPS... very smooth compared to how bad it used to run, even on Medium.

Sadly, I never got a chance to try Battlefield 2 because the better PC doesn't have an internet connection now that it's in a different place, and without an internet connection....... you can't log in, so DOH! I'll check that out later though.

I hope that Battlefield 2 will run as good as FarCry and FEAR... but only time will tell. :hmm:

It's just as good as I expected it to be, but it's not until tomorrow that I get to make my final judgement... because that's when I'll be able to play BF2 and see if it still runs bad or not.

80GB and 100GB are both harddrive capacities... this doesn't have much to do with PC/gaming performance, because your harddrive is just where everything on your PC is stored.

Although it's good to defragment your harddrive about every week/month (Start -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Defragmenter), you really shouldn't have to worry about this hurting game performance unless you have tons of games or applications installed on your PC and you're running low on space.

The main things that really tell whether or not games are going to run well on your PC are processor speed, RAM, and the video card.

In case you aren't too sure on those 3 and want to see how you stack up....

CPU and RAM:
Start -> Control Panel -> System
RAM will be listed as either ### MB RAM, or # GB RAM.
The CPU will be listed as either ### MHZ (unlikely) or #.## GHZ.

Video card:
Right-click on your desktop, click properties, click the "Settings" tab, and your video card's name should be: "Plug and play monitor on Video Card name Here".
OR.....
Start -> Run -> type "dxdiag" (no quotations) and hit ENTER or click OK -> Click the Display tab -> Read what it says beside "Name: ".

After you find out your CPU/Processor speed, how much RAM you have, and what the name/chipset name of your video card is, post all 3 and I'll try and let you know what you would need to upgrade to get the best performance.

Chubz is right...harddrive capacity has nothing to do with performance. But to tell you anyways...to get good performance on BF2 you should have at least:

6600GT or 9800 Pro
1GB of Ram
AMD Athlon XP 3000+ or Athlon 64 3000+
Intel Pentium 4 2.4 GHz (Maybe I am wrong here...don't know much about intel)

Ok，glad you got the vid card running on the other computer. Maybe the ram is the problem then, but it was running before, so i dunno. The CPU can't bottleneck your vid card to be worse than it was running with the 9800. Are you sure you uninstalled all the drivers, becuase only deleting everything related to ATI via control panel might not do it, you could download a program from drivercleaner.net, but i'm not totally sure, because it ran on your other comp.
