    6800Gt installed... not posting

    Well I got my 6800GT today and tried it with my 350watt PSU... a loud constant tone at startup and no Bios post.

    Went to buy a 400Watt... same thing.

    Is this bios beep from a wattage issue?

    I have a 2.0Ghz P4
    2GB DDR 400
    2 Western Digital HD's
    and the new 6800GT

    If this is the problem how many watts do I need?

      hmm, what brand PSU, 400 wat, might have a really weak 12v rail.. so it doesnt make any difference..

      I would recommend a good quality brand.. Antec TruePower II 400w to 500w, or OCZ PowerStream 420W, that should fit your situation well.

        I would say go for at least 400W, try to shoot for 420W though...and make sure the +12V rail is higher than 15A...

          did you remember to connect the 6800gt's molex power connector? It must be connected.

          If you cant get it to post, try stripping down your system to the bare essentials to lighten the electrical load on the ps. Mobo, 1 stick of ram, cpu, 6800gt.

          You might try reseting your bios.

          Make sure the gt is fully seated and there is no interference in the fit.

          Just shooting ideas from the top of my head.

            If it is a PCI-E card though...he will have no molex connector to put in, am I correct (I use AGP)?

              I dont know Snake, Im stuck here with agp for a little while longer myself. Afaik, the pci-e cards use a power connector too.

              I bought an x800xtpe the hour they were released. I cant justify ditching the card so soon, no matter how much I want to transition to pci-e.

              Besides, I want to see ATI's next gen card which is due very soon. I would also like to see how ATI's mobo chipset works out, it's available in limited quantities now so the buzz should start soon.

                It's not a PCI-e card because I doubt he'd be running a 2.0 p4 on any pci-e board...

                With that hypothesis I conclude it's AGP.

                  Ok I am a noob idiot... Yeah it was the power plug on the end of the card. I have been owned. I take it I should stick with the PSU though.

                    PCIe cards use a 6pin connector for power, most come with a converter so you can attach it to a standard molex lead.

                    Dethred: we need to know what the maximum amperage on the +12V rail of your power supply unit is. anything less than 20A is insufficient.

                      i had a 420w thermaltake psu and had crashing problems, i bought a Tagen 480w it came with a special video power connector for both agp or pci-e cards. now it all runs mega :-)

                        My 6600 GT PCIE X16 didn't need a six pin connector. I just had to put it in PCIE X16 slot and it worked.

                            I heard that all you needed was over 15A...I have a 19A on the 12V and it runs perfectly fine.
