Gaming LCD Monitor

Anyone use a LCD for gaming? I've always heard the rumors of cheaper LCDs having issues with gaming systems(ghosting, overheating, blah..... I've been looking around for a 19"-21" LCD monitor and I figured I'd ask what you guys recommend. I currently use a Viewsonic 19" UltraBrite A90F+. Thanks...

Just look for one with a really low response time and you will be fine for gaming.

I've been using a samsung syncmaster 173t. I've been gaming just fine with it. I find I get extremely painful migraines from looking at a CRT monitor for too long.

When I'm gaming, the top of the LCD can get rather hot, but I've never had an actual over heating problem with my monitor.

The ghosting, when immedietly switching over, I did notice a bit of lag, but your eyes will get used to it quickly, I frankly don't even see the lag unless I'm looking for it these days.

I picked up a Samsung 930B-Black LCD-Digital last week because my Viewsonic Crt started smoking.

All I can say is wow, eye strain is gone, colors are incredible and if you use the DVI cable there is no "wondering" about whether your color is corect or not.
When I turned it on the first time the brightness blew me away.
I used to fiddle with that crap all the time.

The best part is you can look at it for hours and walk away with no monitor fuzz.

I cant believe I waited so long to ditch my crt.

One thing I found purchasing one is that there are TONS of model numbers, its almost like comparing mattresses or some of the other products notorius for giving different vendors the same products with different names.

BE CAREFUL that you get the one you want, I almost didnt.

Oh yeah, tack on 50 bucks for a decent DVI cable and 100 for a sweet one.

Its worth it, dont know if the 100 dollar one is unless you have a bunch of electronics around your cables.

I was sceptical about replacing my chunky 19" CRT with an LCD but as the old CRT started to give up the ghost I had to bite the bullet. I went for the BenQ FP937s+ (8ms) and so far I'm very impressed with it. Especially now my desk doesn't look like it's going to collapse like it did with the 20kg CRT Like GlobalFear, I have not noticed any lag or ghosting...

I've seen LCD's quoting 4ms response times now, but anything from 16ms and under will be fine for gaming IMO.

The only problem I have with lcd's are their resolutions. All the current 19" ones only go up to 1280 x 1024 and no furthur -- with today's newer video cards geared to higher resolutions, then we have to stick with crt's for the time being if we want that higher res. The lcd's which do support higher resolutions aren't meant for gaming due to their higher response time. Something needs to be done about this.

Here is whats important:

Response time - Lower then 25ms, 16 or lower is good
Dot Pitch - The lower, the better.
Contrast - 500:1 or better

Otherwise pretty much everything else is relatively the same.

Right now I have a ViewSonic 19" LCD w/16ms response, and I love it.

I've got a Dell 2005fp 20.1 inch Widescreen LCD(16ms, 600:1, 1680x1050), and it's freaking awesome! They are pretty cheap if you live in the US.(I live in Australia, so to get mine at a resonable price, I had to buy mine off ebay)

Only downside for gaming, is that not all games have widescreen support out of the box...BF2 included.

I can still play it at the native resolution, but instead of getting a horizontal gain, I get a vertical loss.(ie. the screen get chopped off at the top instead of widened)

There's a bit of a campaign going on at widescreengamingforum.com to get DICE to implement widescreen into the game with the next patch, so hopfully that pulls through. :)

But yeah, some other games(like UT2004, Half-Life 2 and CS:Source) do support widescreen out of the box, and they look PHENOMENAL!

I just got a new 20.1 inch Dell 2001fp for only $375 with 2 year warranty (some guy had access monitors from his business) and i love it. It has a 1600x1200 Native REsolution so it looks perfect at that res. It also has 16ms response time and has no ghosting while playing. It has really good reviews from well known sites like www.anandtech.com for one and everyone that has it loves it.

My dad just purchased one of these and says it looks great. I was impressed with the size and response time for the price - just wish I had his money!!!
