Perhaps I can shed some light on the subject.

Last night (Saturday), I installed Vista Ultimate Beta 2. Wiped my drive and did a fresh install, not upgrade. This OS looks nice, but it has too many problem, yes I know it's a beta, but the problems I see are ones that I don't think are going to be changed. For example, it's harder to see what you're connected to LAN wise. No longer can you hover over your LAN icon in the tray. You now have to click 7 times to get to the Network Stack as well. I know that doesn't sound like much, but working on PCs for a living, ITs and the like will get frusterated.

They basicly decided to rip off OSX on quite alot of the eye candy featues, and IE7 now has Tabbed Browser (Firefox anyone?).

I haven't seen anything thus far that leads me to believe it is in any way innovated, either by graphics or design. The issue that most people will have though is that some may consider this OS an enthusiast's OS.

In order to fully run your OS, you're going to need at least 128MB vid card, MIN. That can be tolorated by most of us (hey we're all playing BF2, right?), but for companys who stock pile in Dells and/or Gateways, they won't have that high spec of a GPU and will suffer.

I'm currently running a 6200 128MB card and it was choppy, kind of like when you first install XP and don't have GPU drivers installed. It was horrible. There is also this annoying "confirmation" screen that pops up when you do even the most harmless things, like send an icon to your recycle bin. It's proving to be more hassle than it's worth.

They did add lots of stuff though. Like the Windows Defender, some crappy spyware/malware deterant... it sucks. Media Player 11 looks nice, I like how they encorporated most of the Media Center ed. features, but again, it's most ly eye candy.

I can go on and on, but I'll leave it at that. If you have any other questions or comments, go ahead and reply.

The main lesson here, don't use a beta OS as your main OS. This is a beta release and isn't going to be 100% stable. As if BF2 doesn't crash or bomb enough on it's own, you can add insult to injury by running it on Vista at this point and time.

Fedora Core 4 is just as good as XP, more reliable, more stable, and faster, also it cost £0.00 however its harder to use and people are lazy. Also Windows comes free with every machine store bought, i cant actually find a laptop to buy without windows on

are they competing? not even close... I bet most people have never even heard of Fedora... why? Because MS rules... you flamers.

I used the 'default' ATi drives when I tried BF2 on Vista - worked fine for me, but didn't let me pick 1280x1024, only upto 1280x960.

A buddy of mine said he could really see a difference with DX10 though, said things just looked 'sharper', so I took a few screenies compairing DX10 and DX9 and imo there is a slightly better quality in 10.

He didnt take screenshots of DX10 for two reasons. 1) The vista beta is still using basically dx9 but has a just enough dx10 features to fool the os into thinking its dx10, but its not. 2) True dx10 will not run on a dx9 card since its not only a software change, but a hardware change as well.

Uninstalling...er...formating Laptop as we speak. MS has become a bit to policing for me in this one, love the interface, runs a bit slow and the hoops you have to jump through to turn off basic windows options very tiring. The 32bit version I had on my laptop ran older games great BF1942 and DC. Gave me grieve over Deamon tools (some kinda Win2000 debug kurnel, whatever not worth the effert with how slow the Beta is). Would love to test out the 64-bit on my desktop, but to many improtand things and no X-Fi support (might try dualboot, AC97 meh).

I do believe Talus posted a link somewhere to new drivers for x-fi. So they're out there somewhere.

I am running windows vista. After installing the nvidia graphics drivers for vista battlefield surprisingly works! You do have to right click on the icon and say "run as admin" so punk buster does not f you tho.

Anyone running battlefield 2 with vista on a laptop? I'm running it on my XPS gen 2 and whenever i try to join a game or play single player it crashes to my desktop. Does anyone know how to fix this? I'm running it as an administrator too.

I threw Vista on a partition (after reverting it to a basic disk) and I must say - after a few days to let it do its thing, it runs pretty smoothly.

The first 24 hours it WAS very choppy. It actually takes the OS a few hours at least to get its legs under it. However after those few hours, and after working with windows defender ( a program that seems to suggest what some of the slowdowns on your machine might be, and actually suggests how you might fix them, and then rates your machine after your fix ) I have managed to get this thing to run pretty darned well. It is alot of eye candy, but it is pretty well done and isnt SUPER-overpowering.

On to the all important battlefield 2 review.

At first I had nothing but trouble. I had to go out and get the Vista ATI drivers. I did this while vista was "indexing" for faster searches on the drives. This caused one hellova slowdown on the machine. The download from ATI appeared to stall out. After letting it do its thing for awhile, I finally got the drivers and got BF2 cranking (albiet with onboard sound as creative sucks donkeydick and wont support a soundblaster live 5.1 anymore). I had to tell VIsta to run the program as an admin to not get punkbusted, but after that I ran a little more smoothly on slightly higher settings than I can with win2000 and omegadrivers. On win2000 I run all settings high except lighting and dynamic shadows. I was able to kick these up to high as well ( 2x aa and 8x af) and maintain between 30-55 fps. The only thing I noticed that was wierd was a choppy audio during gameplay, but I attributed it to onboard audio - even set on software render. Beyond that, it ran much more smoothly than win2000 (not as choppy, when fps dropped it didnt chop up as bad).

All in all, im pretty pleased so far. If this ends up being "the new thing", at least it will be livable till I build a new machine to really make it fly.

JIC you were wondering, box is a P4 2.8 oc'ed to 3.0, 2GB ram, ATI X850PRO. The machine scored all 4s on the windows defender rating except graphics and gaming which it scored 7s.

JoeG, did you use the 64bit vista? Which build was it? 5384?

Anyway, the reason for me to always switch back to XP after trying Vista is that many programs I use don't work. Either it's the installer telling me that this program is not supported on Vista, or it's just overall buggy, slow or malfunctioning. Which programs other than BF2 did you use, JoeG?
