And 1 gig won't hurt too much, i have a gig, and i'm content with it, you don't HAVE to upgrade ram, but it might help a bit.
Ok, thanks again for the replies you all, but this is what it comes down to... I'm left with some choices. This is the rundown:

Ok, I've narrowed my choices down to either the X800 XL or the X800 XT PE.

I will be able to get the X800 XL at Circuit City because I happened to receive a $75 rebate card from there - along with the $300 that I have for my birthday (I've saved it all up).

    Here is the link:
    X800 XL (256mb AGP) - $269.99 (after rebates)

Now for the most difficult decision of all............ this? Or the X800 XT PE refurbished, directly from ATI's website?

    X800 XT (PE) (256mb AGP) - $229 (refurbished)

Now I know that this one seems like a no-brainer.... the X800 XT is certainly the better card at a better price, but I've heard scary stories about the pre-order and lack of stock deal. Several people... well... actually hundreds of thousands of people supposedly have theirs pre-ordered and are still awaiting shipment after several weeks. This worries me, and I'm still debating with myself whether I should just go ahead and buy the X800 XL for a more expensive price (around $50 more) with no hassles, or whether I should take a chance on the X800 XT Platinum Edition deal - which although spectacular, has left me wondering.

Please give me your opinions, guys... I'll be headed over to Circuit City on Sunday and that is when I will make my decision. If I don't get the X800 XL there, I've already decided to buy another gig of RAM to help Battlefield 2 run a bit better.

Ok... do you have AIM or something like that? I think it'd be easier to discuss there since discussing it here requires several posts explaining several different things.

No problem....... but I do have another question.

What resolution and settings are you running at, and how many FPS do you get? (Minimum to Highest).

yea, is everyone with an x800xl on high?

my settings are everything on high, with shadows on low, 4xAA. 1280 x 1024

i run fraps and usually average between 50-55 fps with a minimum of usually around 30fps. Sometimes lower, but usually when the fps reaches below 30 its because you died during an artillary strike anyway.

But i have never encountered any slow downs with my settings

1280x960@60Hz, All High 2xAA including lighting and shadows, I get an average of 55-60fps my lowest is 30's and the peaks are around 100, using the ingame console and renderer.drawfps 1. It's steadily between 50-60.
My audio is Hardware, Med., no EAX

Ok.. so would you guys recommend paying $299.99 for an X800 XL and then using discounts to bring it down to $269.99 , or is that too much?

Keep in mind that I'm going for the AGP version, because I don't have PCI-E unfortunately.

That's not too much, i bought my X800XL at Compusa because my pops wouldn't let me get one on newegg.com. I paid 300 bucks, but it was well worth it. It'll run on high on 1280x960 with 6xAA (at least for me it does), It won't make much difference, it should run all games out right now on max settings. If you don't want to trust the refurb, then just go for the X800XL.

Dude replace your CPU not your video card.
                      Im 3 GHz , 1 gig ram, 9800 pro.
And I run 1076x; Everything on high, except dynamic lighting and shadows which are off. AA is on 2. And it works perfectly fine?

Why have shadows and dynamic lighting off when the game looks like crap?

That's the point - I want high resolutions with everything INCLUDING shadows turned on, because the dynamic shadows are what really help the game look better.

I've tried playing even with just everything on Medium and my frame rates are quite low, making the game harder to play. That's why I just gave up and set everything on low - it makes it super smooth and much easier to play. That's also why I've been wanting a new video card: I'd like all of the eye candy turned on PLUS those smooth framerates that I get when I put the game on LOW. So Great graphics + Easier playability = New video card.

I hate it when I see a vehicle roll by and there is no shadow or anything cast by it... it really takes away from the realism.

                            Good to hear.

Go into a single-player game (Dalian Plant, since I use that to benchmark with) and try: 1280x1024, Everything maxed (including max AA) and tell me the range of FPS you get. (press the ~/` key and type renderer.drawfps 1 into the console in case you didn't already know).

With my 9800 PRO, on 1280x1024 /w Medium settings, I get 25-40 FPS.

yea, what fps do you get???

anyway i just changed my settings: I dropped down the dynamic lighting to medium, not that it was unplayable, everything is smooth at high if i wanted to. I just have this weird infatuation to keep my fps a little higher.

so i have 1280 x 1024 and 4xAA, everything on high, cept shadows and dynamic lighting on medium. Average fps is a bit higher, but my minimum fps is about 5 fps higher.

Either way this card can play the game smoothly.

What does everyone else get for fps, and what are your settings????
