Dell 310W Power Supply Ample

So Dell decided that 230W would be more than enough for my college computer, and this is seriously hurting my performance with my new X700Pro. The power supply actually stops giving power to the video card so that it won't have to shut down other components, which leads to complete signal loss to the monitor (not overheating, temp stays around 40C. The only upgrade Dell offers is a 305W power supply upgrade. Would this be enough, or do I have to get some other power supply unit, the ATX power supply converter, and then hack at my box to get it to fit? Or are there any other alternatives. PC Power and Cooling Inc. doesn't have one for the Optiplex GX280 like mine.

For the x700PRO that PSU should be fine. I had a 300Watt on my 6600GT. It should work.

I would reccommend buying a 400watts to make sure...my 6600Gt needs about 400watts to operate minimum.
Get a supply that is heavy aswell, not just the DELL power supply.
The heavier (weight) supply = The better.

the recommended settings of powersupply is 480w and higher for PCI and AGP cards.

Depends on # and type of HD's, # of Fans, and other components. CD/DVD rom(s) etc.
I run 520W with dual 12v rails and it's way over kill but it runs rock solid.

Dell PSU's are great. Ive had mine for a very long time.

thing is, usually with dell computers, u have to buy dell parts, cause dell comps are based on proprietery (sp?) designs that limit u from upgrading certain parts with 3rd party upgrades. im guessing to use a 3rd party powersupply, ur gonna need a new mobo too. i could be mistaken but thats the trend with dells. so u pretty much have to go with what dell offers.

I run my 6800GT, 2 DVD drives, 2 HDDs(120gb & 200gb) and Floppy drive on my 300w PSU with no problems. :)

Can't see why you should have any problems with a mid-range card like a X700.
