Memory

I have 4 memory slots, my PC can take up to about 2Mb of RAM that's (4 x 512Mb)
I currently have 512Mb (2 x 256Mb).

If I buy 2 x 512Mb to fill up the 4 slots...would I be able to change the existing 256Mb of RAM for 512Mb also?
Will this lose the info on the memory and mess up my PC or will it be fine?

Should be fine, RAM (Random Access Memory) is just memory that holds information for quick use. You might want to put in 2 of the 512 sticks and then take out the 256, but it really shouldn't matter.

Just make sure to try and buy 4 of the same RAM sticks because using different brands can cause unwanted problems.

Yes if you are going to take the 2 X 256mbs out sell them,
Also make sure you buy 4 X 512mb otherwise if you do mix and match,
latencys can be different and cause erros etc, this gives un wanted problems you dont want.
You could get 2 X 1024mb of the same
that leaves you with 2gb RAM and 2 empty slots for future.

Also though...my rig is on a 2.26Ghz and i'm looking to upgrade the processor chip but i'm unsure as to what my mother board can take! (Speed)
Can anyone help me with this?

You'll need to find out who manufactured your motherboard, and what model it is. Look up their website, and it should give you all the boards specs. (i.e. what memory it can use, processor speeds it is compatible with)

And if you have the money, I strongly suggest Corsair Memory. Best stuff I've ever owned.

Is there a way of finding out the manufacturer on the PC or would I need to open the case up?

You can use programs like CpuZ or Everest and they'll tell you loads about your computer.
