    SCSI vs. SATA

    That's that difference? I'm talkin about Hard Drives. I found a 75GB Western Digital 10,000 in SATA, and a 75GB Seagate 15,000 in SCSI...

    SCSI is more expensive and slightly different type of hard-drives, which allow a faster RPM. However, in performance tests, SATA performs on-par and oftentimes better than similiar SCSI solutions, for a far better price.

    For a gaming rig, go with SATA. SATA II with NCQ would be your best bet.

      How fast can you afford to go?

      Here are some of the fastest EIDE, SATA, and SCSI drives. The fastest SCSI drive is nearly twice as fast but more than eight times the price of the fastest EIDE drive...

      Fujitsu MAU 147 GB SCSI, $827, 909 Game IO/second
      WD Raptor 74 GB SATA, $175, 739 Game IO/second
      Seagate Cheetah 15K.3 73 GB SCSI, $319, 706 Game IO/second
      WD Caviar 2500JB 250 GB EIDE, $98, 551 Game IO/second

        I use multiple 10K SCSI3 drives in my system and always have. And always will since I already made the investment in a SCSI controller. That's the key difference -- you need a $300 SCSI card to use SCSI drives, which every modern mb now supports SATA on board.

          In all honesty, the 10k Raptor isn't worht the money, the performance difference is minimal at best.

            SCSI 320 is unmatched...
            NO SATA drive can compair...
            But a SCSI 320 card is not cheap... and the SCSI drives are not cheap...
            SATA is WAY more bang for the buck...
            I would always vote SATA, unless you have the extra cash...

              Unless your Mobo has integrated SCSI-3 bus you will get better performance with SATA (As long as yoru SATA is onboard the Mobo). Adding SATA or SCSI to your PC via a PCI card constrains the performance to the max of your bus speed. PCI puts a strangle-hold on SCSI or SATA performace.

                SATA in raid 0 properly cooled and with two relativley small drives (80GB ish) if on par with a SCSI set up for Games. You will not notice without benches.

                  your on crack. raptor performance is definately noticable when working with multiple or large files. very noticeble when defraging.
