I've been saving up for a l33t rig that'll run an AMD FX-57, but it costs $1,100 Just for the CPU!! Do any of oyu have reccomendations for cheaper, easy to OC (I've never OCd, let alone BUILT a rig)chips that I could get the same ammount of preformance from?

Buy a pentium M and OC it. Go to websites like hardforum.com, they have some guides and such.

AMD is cheaper, but it doesn't matter much.
Most people i know (games and non gamers) got amd athlon (64).
Guess price/quality is best with AMD.
With intel you probably also pay for the brandname.Comment

go with a 64 chip or FX chip from AMD, just stay away from the new X2 chips becuase they have been having pretty poor performance in gaming...Comment

I believe that the best Performance to Cost ratio CPU out right now is the X2 4400+. The higher 4000's are a bit of a rip-off ATM. I'm getting the 4400 when I'll be building my new rig in a couple of months.Comment

actually the dual cores arent that bad in gaming, you just dont benefint from having two cores when you play... if you play and rip a dvd (or something) at the same time, you'll notice the difference, but otherwise not... i'd say go with a a64 3500+ venice, they arent that expensive, $272.00 on newegg...
you can easily OC it to about 2.7-2.8ghz, which is about what the fx-57 does (at stock speed)... just dont forget to invest in a GOOD hsf combo...

and what sort of insane multitasking are you going to do on that rig? 2 instances of bf2 at the same time? games today arent made to use two cores (or even two processors), så when you play the other core will be doing absolutley nothing...Originally posted by toxikneedle

Well before BF2 came out I could of told you that there's no point in having 2 Gigs of ram since most games don't use that much memory. In fact getting two gigs could hurt your performance since you have to lose 1T and use 2T instead. Saying that buying an X2 is only good if I'll be running 2 BF2s at once is retarded. How do you know that games in the future won't benefit from 2 cores? And even if they won't: The FX-55 is 130nm chip thats rip-off POS. The FX-57 is a good CPU..... but for a f-ing $1,000 that if you look at the benchmarks you get maybe 5 extra FPS in most games compared to 4400 X2. You can buy a 4400, use the extra 500 you wouldn't have to spend and invest in getting a second vid card for SLI or Corssfire or whatever. And get 30-40 extra FPS for the same money.Comment

If you're on a budget, go for the AMD64 3000+ or 3200+ because you can overclock them further than RAM can go. So if you pair these with a good motherboard and RAM you basically can get 3800+ speeds.Comment

I think X2 chips are still worth it. You will probably use that PC for more than 6month and for more than just BF2. The X2 will be much faster in day to day multitasking and in photo or video editing programs. AMD also said that multithreaded games will come out very soon so why be stuck with a singlecore when multithreaded games start rolling out.
and why would the X2 chips suck at gaming?
4800 being the best X2 and the 4200 being the cheapest
but if a few programs would start running in the background it would be more like this
