i have a 2.4ghz dell with 768mb of rdram and a ati 9700 non pro. im thinking of upgrading to a 6600 or 6800gt. right now my card is o'clocked so i can play with everything in med. and tex filter on high (hard to believe i know).
my questions are will my gains suffer from bottlenecking? or anything else?

As far as memory or processor upgrades go, im going to take a stabb at building my own rig in the beginning of next year which i can use the 6600 or 6800gt in if i wish....ps im looking @newegg for my order, which would be best?

Get a X800 256mb at newegg.com, great bang for the buck, neck to neck with the 6800 on most games (not doom 3, nvidia cards pwn Ati on Doom 3) and if you have the money, don't get the X800XL 512mb, it's a waste of 100 bucks, go for the X800XL 128mb, only 270 bucks on newegg.com, no need for 512mb cards for a really long time.

6600 GT's are on Newegg starting at $150. This is the best mid range card. If you could stretch to it I'd really recommend a 6800GT. Will run BF2 with everything on including 4xAA and will last you a long time before you need to upgrade. Or somewhere in between the X800 is a good card although ATi tend not to run opengl games as well as Nvidia.

Also you need more RAM. 768MB is killing you. 2G is perfect. 1.5G is good. 1G gets you by.

Ive been looking @the 6600gt and if the woman isnt looking to close im gonna try and sneak the 6800 by her. as far as ram goes i know more would be better but, i have to build me a rig if i want to continue playing pc games. What ever card i get will be making the switch to the new rig anyways and i probally won't be using that expensive a$$ rdram(pc 1066) in it.

dont buy anything yet. worst time possible to buy as nvidia just released there new flagship and shuld be doing the same with there mid-range etc. Ati is also supposed to be releasing there new cards as well. So in about 2-3 months tops your 200 bucks should go ALOT further and you might also accumulate a bit more money as well.

If you are going to build a new computer next year hold off unless you are currently using PCI-express which im assuming you are not. If you buy an AGP card now you wont be able to put it in a PCI-E motherboard which is now the way to go since ATI and Nvidia are slowly phasing out AGP. The 9700 should be fine for now. I would suggest getting a heat sink and fan for abuot 30-40$ and overclock it.

I Have it o'clocked now the stock settings were 263.25 memory and core.
with a Artic Cooler fan attached i was able to get it too 276.8 memory/ 337.5 core.

you make a lot of sense. waiting and going with a PCI-E motherboard may be the thing to do. I could put the cash on more memory $229.50 for another 512mb, the only thing is when i build my new rig I dont think im gonna use that type of memory.
