All you'll do by purchasing a 7800 or even X850xt is make your processor the bottleneck. I'd save up a little more and build yourself a completely new setup. You'll be much happier in the long run.

And you think this will change when, next year? Fact is no CPU will be powerfull enough for some time to make the latest and greatest GPU's the bottleneck.
If you haven't been following, the power of GPU's surpasses CPU power tremendously.
So, being that he has a HP OEM system with a ATI Radeon 9200 with 128MB memory, he is better off purchasing a 6800GT or X800XL. Mainly due to pricing/bang for buck.
I currently have a BFG 6800 GT/OC and enjoy gaming at 1024x768 4xAA/8xAF. :)
I'd agree that you'd be wasting a whole lot of money by putting a "next-gen" vid card like the 7800 in that rig. Better off getting either a 6800GT or a X800XL for around $280. If you want to really boost the performance of BF2, also upgrade you memory to 2 gigs if you can afford it, it really has been showing MASSIVE improvements in stability and lag when 2 gigs are used, even when its an upgrade from 1 Gb. You'd shiite yourself if you went from 512mb to 2Gb, it would run so much smoother. Try it, you'll thank me.
I have an X850XT PE and it runs the game with everything on high at 1280x976.
uummhh... your x850xt pe ONLY runs everything on high at 1280? i have a 6800le wich costs like $130, and i run everything exept geometry, wich i have on medium, at high at 1280... ofcourse the card is slightly overclocked, 400/900 (300/700 is stock speed) and 16/6 pipes... now that i think about it thats faster than a 6800gt...
edit: oh, and 4 gigs of ram??? wow thats not very smart... 2 gigs isn't even very useful... 1.5gigs is more than enough... BF2 takes around 800mb, so even 1gb runs it and every other game just great... i have 1gb, and i've never noticed any swapping
Mushkin Redline will run at much high speeds with tighter timings than some crappy eBuyer RAM. Thus getting more performance.
If you want to get better performance from your system in terms of raw speed and not graphical power, ram is the biggest bottleneck.
BF2 uses an insane ammount of ram due to a leak in the games code that seems to hog about a gb. I bet half of it isnt even useful.
RAM can't magically give you better graphics, it will allow your system to handle more graphical aspects, more texture size, more objects etc. So the computer is not having to take as much from the hard drive or deeper depths of the ram while ingame.
Original poster: Make sure you upgrade that power supply before you go graphics card shopping. 200W may be able to run a 9800 Pro, but anything better than that you will need more juice.
I'm not sure, but HP may use proprietary power supply connectors. Check with them to see if you can upgrade it.
