Switched to a better monitor...now I can't play!?

Greetings all. First time poster - you've got a great forum going here!

I've been playing and thoroughly enjoying BF2 for a few weeks now, but up until last Friday I had been using a pretty crappy old monitor. Over the weekend I was able to upgrade to a 21" Dell 2001FP...and now BF2 won't run at all. I didn't change my graphics card or make any other changes. Now when I try to run BF2 the screen goes black, hangs for several seconds, and then returns to the desktop. As you can imagine, this is very frustrating...I haven't satisfied my killing fix in several days now! :evil: Any ideas?

Set your Refresh rate to 60HZ and your desktop to 800x600 see if that works.

CRT monitors are much better than LCD monitors, obviously

No dice. My refresh rate is at 60Hz and I've tried every resolution from 800x600 to 1600x1200 with the same results.

Reinstalling the game must solve your problem. But you could try to delete a folder which has your game settings reserved. This might solve your problem too.

Ok try this just to see if it will run

Right click the BF2 shortcut and click properties, you should see a target box with something like this in it

"C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +menu 1 +fullscreen 1

Where it says fullscreen 1 change the 1 to a 0, this will force the game to boot in windowed mode, at least then we can narrow the problem down.

The game won't boot in windowed mode, Punisher. I get a "BF2 Error" box with the following text:

Debug assertion failed!

Module: RendDX9
Text: Unknown DynamicOption value 1024x768 @ 100Hz

It's deffinitly a refresh rate problem. Your best bet would be to re-instal but make sure you delete the left over folder in program files. but just try this first

Go to My Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles\0001 and delete video.con, just make sure you change the refresh rate back to 1 in the target box first.

Punisher, you're the man. I edited the Video.con settings for each of my profiles to 60Hz and the game runs now. Thanks a million!

Its your settings, namely the refresh rate that was set in the BF2 options menu. Because the DVI connector setting is defaulted/limited to 60Hz, if the settings in the game are not changed and you upgrade from a CRT to an LCD without changing the setting first, the game will crash to desktop before you even see the EA logo.

Try one of 2 things:
1. Unplug the LCD and plug in the old CRT, start the game, change the settings in the "Video" menu to 1024x768 at no higher than 60Hz. The 60Hz is the important part, because if its >60Hz, you'll get the crash-to-desktop again. Close the game, turn off the PC, and plug the LCD back in. This should work, if not....

2. Uninstall/Reinstall the game. Make sure to delete ALL setting and configs for the game, otherwise it'll probably remember the old Video settings and crap out again. Patch this biotch, and it should run fine, as long as those old settings are changed.

***Alternately, you could find the right config file and change the video settings manually with the Notepad editor, but that's a bit tricky, and I don't know where the right file is at the moment!
