I know my hardware and computers pretty well.

But I was wondering how much memory windows xp home edition supports 32-bit. I have had a friend with 4 gigs and all worked perfectly, I have heard that it does not read anything above 3 gig?

Can someone give me the real answer?

Any 32-bit operating system (XP or Vista) will not detect 4 gb of system RAM. 64-bit OS systems (Xp Pro or Vista Bussiness/Ultimate) will detect and use 4 gb of RAM.

In other words even if you had 6GB (you can do that) installed the 32bit XP will recognize and use only around 3,5 GB.

32 bit OS's can only address up to 4 gig RAM physical & virtual combined, my XP x64 can address up to 128 gig physical & 16 tera virtual. In the x32 enviroment some memory addresses are reserved for the SYSTEM so the reason only 3.5 is seen.
