well, my specs are on the thread titled "my laptop" so i was wondering what kind of resolution i should be playing at? im currently on a 17" widescreen laptop, so what resolution should i be on? i think its currently on 800x600. any ideas?

Just try the bigger resolutions out. The optimal choice of course would be the native resolution. I can't remember what it is for 17" widescreen, but you'll find out by taking a look at the manual/box where the laptop shipped with. Here's a good chart to consult when thinking about bigger resolutions since you prefer to keep the aspect ratio as close to same than the native resolution.
In bf2142 you can't select easily resolutions so search for how to set 1280x1024 and you get the idea how to circumvent the problem.
Your graphic card is not a real speed demon, so I doubt you'll be able to creep past 800x600 unless you are willing to sacrify speed and details a lot.
