Buy one CPU of each type, and see which one fits?

Or try running dxdiag and post a screenshot, maybe there is enough info for somebody to help you.

Knowing the name and make of your MB would be even better.

ETA You mention intel core 2 duo 4400 2.00 Ghz in another thread, and they all seem to be socket 775

        Hmmm

Belarc is good in showing what hardware you have, you can run it and see what mainboard you have and post it and people can let you know the socket type :)

Belarc's products automatically create an accurate and up-to-date central repository (CMDB), consisting of detailed software, hardware, network and security configurations. Customers use our products for software license management, IT asset management, cybersecurity audits, information assurance, and more.

CPU-Z is the best program for finding out everything you need to know about your CPU. Link: http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpu-z-141.zip

^ but cpu-z is not compatible with older machines, like mine.
