Pimp up my Vista.

seems that I'm here collecting some favors done to you so bear with me

I finally got myself the Vista Home Premium version and after the migration of most of the stuff from XP I'm tuning the Vista a bit.

What mostly irritates me about is that HD is running all the time and Indexer is the culprit. After searching up about this the big suckeroo is that you can't turn it off but limit the directories. This was a kick in the nuts. If anyone has a good point how to make indexer to search near no directories I'd be most happy.

Secondly. UAC is getting under my skin a bit and turning it off only gives the security warnings every time I turn my machine on. Any way to get rid off the warning?

Thirdly. How to make rivatuner (or any "publisher unknown" program) to be able to be started-up without the over jealous Vista not preventing running these kind of start-up programs? UAC is seems to be the problem here, but turning it off is not helping. I haven't been able in Control Panel -> Start up programs -> Defender -> Software explorer section to give permission for rivatuner to run.

Is turning Defender off the solution?

I have to say that Vista is very nice to my old eyes but I miss XP from the stability and user controllability point of view. I mean that most of the stuff is the same and some have been made even easier to find/use, but there is just too much that Vista is doing in the back-ground. I had these same sentiments when I moved from 98 to XP, but XP came through very nicely and was very easy to use and control. I suspect the same happens to Vista when I get the hang of things.

Good advices how to tune up Vista for gaming or especially that rivatuner problem are gladly taken.

Well, I got Vista Home Premium too, and it pisses me off when XFire wont autorun cause Vista has lots of security. It pisses me off realy!

And Vista is the best gameing softwere, cause it supports Direct X 10!

1. Leave UAC enabled. Yes, it can be annoying at first, especially when installing all of your programs for the first time. Get through it, and then it won't bother you much at all anymore. I almost never get anything popping up nowadays, and sp1 will get rid of many of the popups you see now. The only thing I'd disable is secure desktop, but I don't know if you can in home premium.

2. Leave the indexer running over the entire drive. It may take a few days to calm down, but once it stops thrashing around your experience will get much better. I can't live without the new search, so keep it running.

3. For rivatuner, there are some guides floating around the internet walking you through installing it as a service, which will fix your startup woes (as long as vista is 32bit)

4. There are no real gaming tips, just let vista run for a week before you start judging or disabling everything in sight. If a game isn't working right, run it as admin.

5. And finally, just Let it run. I cannot emphasize that enough, just let vista do its thing. You don't need to disable anything or tweak anything to get it running great out of the box. Just remember, as far as an os goes, vista is extremely smart (unlike xp, which is downright retarded in comparison) so there's nothing you need to do.

Anyone know a fix with Vista not being able to run BF2142s Disk? It worked fine for a week now it wont read it for some reason. It reads BF2 fine and the 2142 disk isnt damaged in any way. Please help!

I'll give it a fair chance before tweaking it further.

Regarding rivatuner it seems it's either UAC off or UAC on and having un-unblock the rivatuner everytime. At least until the driver is signed (which has happened to 64 bit version). The registry tweak to by-pass UAC is a bit on the extreme side for my taste at least at this point of trying to find my feet with Vista.

I want to share a minor revelation I had today with Vista and it's problems. All you who are using Aero should pay a bit of attention to the next piece of advice.

I have and still do have problems with Digi TV box and TV-over-net player programs not to mention PowerDVD 6. Digi TV and TV-over-net both have the sound but the picture is black. PowerDVD switches off the Aero and reverts to Vista Basic mode but is able to play the DVD.

Anyway, Vista uses DirectX9 to draw out Aero (thus the cards need to support DX9) and so does the vast majority of video player apps like PowerDVD. That's the "hardware acceleration" check-box for you if you ever wondered the meaning of it in applications.

Either it's Vista's video drivers (nvidia in my case) or the e.g. PowerDVD's driver's fault but they can not get along and draw on the same screen. The same goes for those other apps. One solution is that you can try to turn off Aero while using such apps. But there is a better solution where there is no need to turn Aero off (or have Vista do it automatically). OpenGL! That way you can have that cool Aero on and see the picture onto player. So check the application options and use OpenGL as a renderer if you are encountering such problems that the player is showing you black screen.

Currently I'm using 8800GTS with Forceware 163.44 beta, with which I was actually occasionally able to see the picture, where 162.22 WHQL always showed black screen only. This leads me to point finger to nvidia being the ultimate root of the problem. Well, not only nvidia but also the application makers need to step up their game since Windows media player is not suffering these kind of black-outs.

Someone with more mature drivers in 7000 series nvidia card could post his/her experiences with Vista and hw accelerated apps. I doubt there are problems there.

My game looked much better with vista because of DX10. But I kept getting punkbuster messages so I went back to XP.

Ever since I got Vista my surfing has been annoyingly slow. Either with IE or Firefox. I suspect that's phishing filters fault, but can't be sure. Anybody know how to speed up things?
