Buying Vista Vs. Xp

the old HD thread got me thinking.... I'm in a similar position, as my computer didn't even come with a rescue disk!

I plan on doing a mobo/cpu/ram overhaul in the next month or 2, and I'm thinking a clean reinstall would be beneficial.... question is... I know vista will be a reality in a year from now... is it worth it to buy an XPpro full install now (well, next 3 months) or just by vista?

Just buy vista, don't be scared by what the hates say. It is whats coming xp is on its way out and vista is moving in. If you want to future proof get vista as more DX10 games will be coming

If you think it like this: There is no reason anymore to BUY Windows XP. You'd investing into old tech. If you'd happen to have/be able to get XP for free then doing the install with it would be ok. Still it might be reasonable to buy the Vista now since you get the cheaper OEM price.

Dont get vista, me mate has it and he cant install most games he has. I mean it thinks his bf2 is not installed when it actually is. He cant uninstall most games, and windows problem solver crashed, i mean wtf?? nothing can help so hes down grading to XP.

Just because your friend is an idiot doesn't mean that he shouldn't upgrade. I've been using vista since it was released, and haven't had a single major problem. As long as your hardware has the proper drivers and you're comfortable upgrading, go ahead and go for it. :)

Your choices are many 4 versions of XP (Pro, Home, MCE or Pro x64), Vista Basic, Home Premium, Ultimate x32 or x64.

My choice is XP Pro x64, been run'n it for over a year now.

Research ALL your hardware for driver support before deciding.

Home Premium is the sweet spot. Ultimate is just a waste of money IMO unless you need those extra stuff.

I use vista ultimate, no problems at all and i dont see the point in buying a striped down version of vista, that and i use the stuff thats locked out in the lower versions when i work from home so its all needed.

More stable than xp without any issues installing programs.

Vistas really good (but not related to this does any1 know why vista wont talk with XP i got hamachi and my friend has vista n i have XP it wont work any1??)
