Hi,I'm wondering what is the fastest chip I can get for my 939 motherboard.I have a 4000 in it now and I'd like to up grade.I also have a 7800gtx and I wonder if I should get another for SLI .What do you think would a setup like that get me through the next generation of games?

I don't think it's worth going back to 939, you should move forward instead of backward. Go for AM2 or C2D. -
totally, go core2duo all the way, 7800gtx is well past it, along with the 939

well yes, changing a motherboard involves a new pc essentially. i guess the best you can get is a dual core 4800 x2, although you certainly won't be current-gen and won't have the power to play any new games at a reasonable level of detail / fps
your best bet might be to find a barebones pc which comes with case, mobo and psu. from there you only need to insert ram, cpu, gcard and hdds etc, would be much easier.
IF you are into gaming in the near future (eg bioshock, crysis, ut3 etc) then most people would urge you to save up until you can take the plunge with a new cpu (q6600 is getting cheaper and cheaper) and dx10 capeable graphics card
my only advice is don't stick with 7800s and 939s :)Comment

I have a 939 4000+ with a 7800GTX. Is there really any need to upgrade at the moment? I play every game on high settings with a decent FPS.
At the moment there arnt really any games that require any more, so save your money untill DX10 games come out. Then upgrade.Comment

Ditto Dawkins. Unfortunately the 939 is a dead end- An extra 7800gtx is still a DX 9 card mated with an obsolecent board and CPU. (Not ragging on it- my system kicked a$$ a few years ago when I build it- FX55, 7800gtx, ASUS 939 board. Still handles 2142 o.k. with only slight decreases to the graphics settings. With a 4000 CPU, you're probably in the same boat, so it makes sense to sit tight until you can swing a new mobo and CPU. If you're more comfortable with a bare-bones kit, keep an eye on newegg or tigerdirect for a special on a newer configuration.

Thank you all,I am VERY happy with my 4000 and was just thinking if for a few hundred I could really get a jump I'd give it some thought.I play BF2,2142;HL2,fear all on high and all higher than 10x7.BF2@ at 1600x1200 smooth as silk.But its not DX10 or mulity core so someday next spring I'll send it in to get a real upgrade.thanksComment

Places to sell
Sorry to hijack the thread, but this is somewhat related. I have the same rig (Asus 8NSLI Premium 939 mobo and dual 7800GTX Extremes). What's the best place to sell the parts so I can throw some scratch at an upgrade? I have ebay but they nickle and dime you on fees. Craigslist seems to be loaded with a bunch of yahoos who aren't serious about dealing. Anyone have any experiences selling their middle aged rigs? Thnx!Comment

Hate to tell you, but with the pace of technology, we've already had guys in our clan giving away rigs like that (or at least components thereof) to clanmates. Best bet might be if you can find someone local to you that wants a decent setup, but is o.k. with "out of date." You're not going to find that among gamers. Think friends parents, etc. Might be able to get a couple hundred bucks.Comment

The problem is that even you can get a slightly better performance out of your 939 by getting a new processor, but it's gonna cost you too much cash-wise. There isn't really a jump you are looking for unless you change to C2D.
But if you are dealing with PCI-e in your mobo then it's a nice boost to get 8800GTS and leave the proc alone. Sure 8800GTS full potential stays unrealised but it gives a boost you are looking for now and gives later a new boost when you are changing to C2D.Comment

With regards to the original question, the best processors available for s939 is
4800+ X2, FX60 and Opteron185.
I went from a 3800+ to a Opteron 180, and while it has doubled my 3Dmark06 CPU score, there hasnt been a "jump" in BF2142 performance.
If you must upgrade, then do as looquas suggest and get a good GFX card that you can keep when you eventually scrap your current CPU/MB/RAM.
But if you are happy with the performance now then wait with the upgrade until you need it. What is state of the art now will be cheaper in 6 to 12 months and still perform just as good.Comment

Well i upgraded to an fx59 for 139.00 us dollars. Not bad going from a 3500 proc. Its a single core but if youve read up on the subject youd of found out 2142 only utilizes a single core doesnt even use the second core its the game engine that holds ya back so iam totally happy with single core for now. But the fellas are right if you are going to spend bucks change out mobo and proc.Comment

I'm on a socket-939 motherboard too and I recently upgraded from a 3500 to an Opteron 165. It definatly gave my system a good boost and with the watercooling system I have, I OC'ed the Opty 165 to 2.7Ghz on 1.4v (motherboards limit). I plan on doing a volt mod to my motherboard to I can peak out at 1.5v and get my opty to 3Ghz.Comment
