Would an AMD upgrade be cheaper?

Hi,

I'm upgrading my processor from a Celeron D and so I need a new motherboard to go with it. Initially I looked at the Intel path and, by upgrading to a E4400 and compatible motherboard, the total goes to $185.99 (shipping not included). Now before I spend this cash I want to make sure I checked all options and so I want to have a look at what AMD has to offer. Here's the deal:

• I want a dual-core processor so that I can use FRAPS without FPS hit.
• The processor must run 1:1 with PC3200 DDR 400 RAM - no bottlenecking or anything.
• The motherboard must be compatible with DDR 400 RAM.
• The motherboard must have a AGP slot, a PCI-E slot is nice but optional.
• The AMD CPU should perform at the same level (or above it) as the E4400.

A quick spot check on tigerdirect reveals that there are no socket 775 mobos with an AGP slot... I'll have to check newegg and others, but I would imagine that finding dualcore support on a mobo with AGP might prove challenging.

Quick question. If you don't want to bottleneck the ram clockspeeds by a differing frontside bus speed (on an outdated type of ram I might add), why would you want to bottleneck the performance by using a low bandwidth AGP mobo?

You could have the loch-ness motherboards lol I have this one and it has a wide support of eveything you ask for but its intel only.

It has AGP and PCI-E, but will not support SLI, unfortunatly.

Thats the problem, you've had it for some time... sometimes it's hard to still find those boards... but hey - if you found one today - more power to you!

DDR Ram and AGP are dying technologies. You'll want to upgrade to PCI-Express and DDR2 Ram (or DDR3 for the daring), while you're at it. Since those require motherboard overhauls, you might as well do it while you get a new motherboard.

Core 2 Duo's are really nice. For a cheap dual core, get the E6300 or E6320. E6600 for performance (if the price doesn't break you).

2:again easy. (outdated tech)
3:still easy. (outdated tech)
4:wow this is so easy. (outdated tech)
5:impossible. no current amd cpu outperforms c2d.

actually there are amd processors that outperform the e4400. but like the sir member has said, u r really better off with a new com. no point clinging on to ddr ram and agp boards.

It supports up to 4800 X2 / Opteron 185 / FX60 but only DDR RAM.

I wouldn't sink my money on the AMD 939 slot mobo anymore. Especially if you are getting all the parts new.

You're way better off with doing the complete system overhaul.

If you are still adamant about this then head to asrock's website like the guys pointed out. They are well-known for making "dual" mobos which usually support either DDR/DDR2 memory options or AGP/PCI-E options on the same boards.

intel e4400 will be better. anyway, 939 is already outdated amd tech, the better am2 was already out for a long time and am2+ and am3 wil be out soon.

939 does not suck per se, but it's out-dated tech and investing into it is not just worthwhile. It would be an entirely different story if you already had 939 mobo and you were up-grading that.
