    System upgrade

    I have accumulated £150 and am in desperate need of a graphics upgrade. My GeForce FX 5200 just doesn't push it anymore and I would love to play Battlefield 2142 with all the settings as high. I have been keeping up with most computer developments, but know little about graphics cards so was wondering if you are able to help me.

    I currently have an archaic motherboard so my only choice is to get an AGP card or to upgrade everything and get a PCI express. The former is preferable, however I don't know how high I can get an AGP card within my budget. If they are all pretty low grade I am happy to save up a few months and get a completely new system at Christmas. Any advice would be appreciated.

      i think u should jus save up till christmas cos 150 isnt gonna get u any high end card to play on all high.

          It depends on the resolution you play the game at. If you're playing at 1280 x 1024 or lower then I suspect that an X1950Pro would allow you to play at high (based on TrustedReviews' article on it), even with your processor. Scan.co.uk has them for £113.26, which is well within your budget, and would keep you going for 5 months. I'm assuming that BF2142 is the only game you want this for, of course...

              AGP is on it's last legs so my advice would be to save a bit more and get a PCI system. Have you considered selling your old kit on eBay? Thats what I always do and even pretty old componenets can fetch a few quid.

                  Although I am only interested in playing Battlefield 2 and 2142 I do want to future-proof my PC. If DICE are planning (as I have heard) another game in the Battlefield series I want to make sure that I can play that too. Also it would be cool to beat my step-fathers computer (he recently fried his motherboard so ended up getting an Intel Core 2 Duo). Since you say that AGP is on its last legs I would rather spend lots of money on a good PCI system that I don't have to upgrade for a couple of years (in the last 4 years the only thing I have change is my mother board - because the old one was crap - and ram) so a new PC should last me for at least that long. I will have a look around eBay to see what the going rate for my hardware is, but I will have to get a loan off my parents as I would want to keep my old PC until I got my new one - maybe at Christmas.
