Overclocking

So i'm going to do my first overclocking. I have been reading on it and I still don't really get it's concept. I now know i can overclock my GPU and CPU, and what i wanted is to know if you have any experience with it and what are your opinions.

Os: Windows 7 64 bit home premium
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T9550 2.66GHZ (2 CPU's) ~2.7GHz
RAM: 4gb
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GT 130M


I do now want to burn my laptop, just a regular overclock. So, should i overclock my graphics card or my processor? it seems overclocking the graphics card would help me the most since GPU power it's the thing that it's lacking the most when running BF3, but is there a problem if i overclock both?

Yeah, I have experience with overclocking and you dont want to do this. You have a laptop and they are designed for specific heat requirements. Their fans and airflow are pitiful at best. Youve had to send in your laptop twice for your fan failure, so thats not a good sign to begin with.

If you simply insist on doing it, I would overclock the GPU only. It will put out the less heat of the two and the side effects to overheating will be less disasterous than the CPU.

Hmm, yeah, i'll insist on doing it but i'll make sure to be constantly monitoring the temps. Also my cpu is running pretty cool now, i spent the last 2 days undervolting and running cpu stress tests and i managed to lower from 1.1750 to 1.000 with a temp drop of max of 70C to 55C , and a min of 30ish~40IshC to 23C.
I also have a desktop fan i can set under the laptop to help out with the cooling, is it better to make the airflow go inside the laptop or to pull the hot air from inside?
What software do you recommend to overclock, and is there any way to make the laptop only be overclocked when i run the game? It seems to be possible in the nvidia control panel but i am not sure if that is the best software to use.


EDIT: From my research it seems the best and most used would be Afterburner and and a friend told me he used furmark to stress test it

I would use the Nvidia software to overclock the GPU. Its easier that way and you know its being done.

Its pretty easy to do on a modern system, but the gains were never worth it when I tried it.
Say you overclock a 3000 MHz CPU to 3300 MHz. Thats a 10% gain, or a jump from 30 to 33 FPS. Is that worth the risk of frying expensive components? Not to me.

I did benchmark it in Futuremark after the overclock, and that cofirmed my predictions: Not worth the risk.

What is it is just a 600mhz xD? I'll just try it out, and if i notice the difference/improvement is not worth it, i'll just set it to normal clocks again. I just wanted to test it out and learn something new

Stupid idea, on a laptop anyway, it's just not worth it.
