    Graphics Card Problem

Alright so every now and then my computer will do this:

I have a radeon 5850 with the most updated drivers. However even after constantly deleting the old drivers and installing the newest ones, my computer still does this. This seems to happen randomly (when I leave my computer on or when I'm surfing the web)

    Other specs:

Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q8300 2.50 GHz
    3 gigs of ram
    Windows XP Professional

    Any help would be appreciated

Oh and a simple restart fixes this problem...until it comes up again.

You checked to make sure the card is clean and blowing air?

Yup my card's fan is blowing. Oh and a side note, this graphical glitch doesn't happen when I'm playing games which is strange.

So if it does the glitch, can you run a game and it be fine?

Just scanned it, nothing malicious found. Do you think there could be a problem with the card itself?

Edit: nvm, doing a deeper scan

Yeah, there could be a problem with the card, but I dont want to rule out software problems first.

The thing is that if it was the card, it should happen in game also, which you said it was not. Soooo, that makes me think a software issue.

Alright well I just removed a bunch of trojans so I'll see if the problem resurfaces. Thanks for all your help!

Sorry to say but I removed all the trojans but the problem still occured. This time it was a bit different as the monitor blacked out and I couldn't do anything but restart.

If you have a spare partition or HD, you could try doing a fresh Windows install to see if that helps.
That could tell you if your old install is corrupted, and in the end it may take less time than debugging the old install.

So I created a thread on AMD game forums and it seems the problem lies with my quote "complete and utter, total garbage" coolmax power supply. I guess I'm buying another PSU

                            Re: Graphics Card Problem

Hmm, your PSU should be under much heavier load when gaming, so I would expect a faulty PSU to be more visible at that time.
A quality PSU is always good, but they are kind of expensive too.

Can we have a link to the AMD thread? They may be rigth, but I am curious about the reasoning.
