I recommend you build your own. I work with a lot of external drives and you pay more for what seems to be cheaper drives. I see a lot more failures in external drives than I do internal. They are the same hard drives, but they dont seem to last for whatever reason.

Short of building your own, Ive seen mixed reviews on that model. I have an older Seagate external and it has worked great.

By build your own you mean get an internal drive and just get an external case for it? If i was going to do that, any specific things i should Take into consideration?

Yeah, exactly.

The main thing is the case. I have a nice one that does usb and SATA. It has no cooling as it doesn't need it and its easy to work with.

They even make docs for internal drives. You just hook them up then plug in any drive you want.

So the main thing is the connection and power as well as the size drive it can support.

So here is an example:

This thing: its SATA to eSATA/USB so you can choose what you want (Does require AC Power):

Total cost is about £58

Now if you HAVE to have an external enclosure without a power supply, it will have to be USB and tends to be a slower RPM drive. Not always, but it costs more and you may get less drive performance because of the power limitations.

Hard drive dies, no biggy, get another one and slap it in. Craddle dies, no biggie, get another one and put the hard drive in.
