Help Suggest a PC Build
Hello old TGN forum goers. Needing advice on a PC build so I decided to come back to where I knew I could get some great help.
Here are my basic parameters:
CPU:
I've been looking at comparisons between AMD and Intel. I've always had Intel but have seen where AMD has great prices. I've been looking at AMD 6 core, but have seen where even a Intel quad can out perform an AMD 6 when it comes to basic use that may only require one or two cores. But an AMD 6 core is much cheaper than an Intel. From what I see an AMD is way cheaper than an Intel 6 core and it also performs slightly worse than Intel, but not so much worse that I think paying hundreds more for Intel is worth it.
Good or no?
RAM:
I think 8GB will be sufficient for long term use. I have looked at a 1333 8GB kit from Corsair that is 2x 4GB. Normally I go with Kingston as they have always seemed to be the superior brand so I am rather open on this. As long as it is 8GB (can be 4x2GB or 2x 4GB doesnt matter really, if way cheaper go with 4x2GB)
Hard Drive:
1TB is my only item on this. Looking for something fast at a great price.
Motherboard:
Whatever will work with the selected CPU and a NVIDIA GPU. Would like to have USB 3.0 if possible.
OS:
Windows 7 Home Premium, will see about buying this and Microsoft Office software through Ohio University for a student discount.
Sound:
Would the on board sound be good enough? Don't need to by speakers already have a set at home.
Optical Drive:
DVD Writer, maybe Blu-Ray reader if cheap enough.
GPU:
I have always been a NVIDIA man, I would like to stay that way. As long as it supports the latest DirectX and has 1GB minimum I think I will be satisfied. I've had great experience with my EVGA 6600GT, I know there are some other great brands out there too.
Case:
Full Tower, no stupid lights or the crap towers with all the gaming crap all over it, I want something simple that the whole family can look at. We have a dust buildup problem so I suppose extra fans to help keep it cool with plenty of air flow? Black, silver, or white doesn't matter.
Power Supply:

Monitor:
I'm thinking 21 or more with HD? Would prefer a major brand not just some unknown Chinese made monitor.
Misc.:
- Keyboard of same color to match case. Doesn't need to be a gaming keyboard.
- Mouse of same color to match case. Again nothing crazy gaming like. Just 2 button with a scroll wheel.
- Liquid cooling? or just fans?
- If most items can be gained through a builders kit that is great for price.
Price:
$800 - $1000 (in Ohio so no sales tax for online sales for outside Ohio companies)
Never built my own PC, my brother has and will be doing most the assembling, this will be a family use PC that we want to last for many years. (This 2001 Dell is still going with some upgrades). So please provide suggestions for all items, and with good feedback not just (i have this brand therefore I like it, etc.)
