New GPU/Other parts.

Its that time of year again to upgrade...well I never got around to it last year so its time to actually do it this time!

I have roughly £150-200(Max) to spend on a GPU. Might look at a few other things also.

Current specs.

E8400 @ 3.0 GHZ.
22'' (?) Samsung Syncmaster @1680x1050
8600GT 512
4GB of ram
Windows 7
500gb seagate HD.

So I am looking at the 460's for GPUs which seem to be at a reasonable price. Are the newest ATI cards worth looking at? Although I would prefer to stay with Nvid.

Is only having a dual core going to restrict the newest GPU's somewhat? should I look more mid-range?

Edit:

If its around 600w from a good maker it should be ok.

The contenders are: (I love price drops)

£189.99 - XFX 5870 1gb
£159.68 - XFX 5850 1gb
£153.99 - GTX 460 1gb

You will probably get a bottleneck with the 5870 but Ive yet to find a game that it struggles with it, then you can get a Quad Core off ebay when you have some spare cash

Coolermaster something - 650w.

Much difference between the 460 and 5850? I am leaning towards the 460 just because of brand :p

Went with a Gigabyte 460 for £140 :)

Although I think it is going to take forever now the snow has hit

i would also highly recommend upgrading your cpu to a quad core as soon as you can. dual core systems on most of todays games dont work well. also, buying a high end (or even a mid range) video card with a low end cpu wont help you at all because of bottlenecks.

What games actually utilize all four cores? I was under the impression that you can still get by with a higher clocked C2D just fine without bottlenecking the CPU...

Very few as far as I know.
But those other cores might still be useful for running those 69222 other processes that windows need.
