ATi 6 series any good? and why so cheap?

    http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/p...79-00-40r.html

visited novatech and found this, 200 quid is certainly cheap for a new line of gfx cards, do you guys have any intel on this card?

AMD has changed their naming scheme, so that x8xx now is midrange, and the high-end cards are all in the x9xx series.
      So a 68xx may be inferior to a 58xx.
It seems like a card with good price/performance, but you need to research carefully before you buy, or you may end up downgrading your system

ETA: "Barts" are the 6850 and 6870

Check this thread out to see the info on the 6xxx's MLAA, goodbye AA's performance hit.

That is what the benchmarks are saying, at least in terms of raw FPS.
But apparently MLAA can also be enabled on the 5xxx series.

I see the difference in the link by Scinto. Nice read though in Basil's link. I knew something was off when i saw that price in novatech, thanks for clearing that up Vreki.

I am not in the market yet for a new card though just keeping an eye on future surprises lol.

The 6990 should be out before xmas and that will be the replacement for the 5970 iirc.

Alternatively you can go green with Nividia's GTX 580 (Assuming the rumours are true).

Got it working on mine, shame it doesnt work in BC2 else I'd have 50 fps more

The way MLAA works, it will be blurring the whole picture to some degree, and not just the edges. I saw someone describing it as having Vaseline smeared on the screen.
Does the degradation of image quality bother you? I fear that it will be a real handicap in games like MoH, where it is already pretty hard to see opponents.

It doesnt bother me in game, you tend to notice it more when you see the Steam popup boxes that arent crisp text.

It doesnt work in BC2 so I doubt its going to work in MoH.

i would like Nvidia very much but the prices are hell, although i have been keeping an eye the gtx470 i found some lucrative prices.

So with all the quid talk, I googled a few things and went on a few UK sites and found the GTX470 is also along that price range. From what I have seen, and Vreki's chart, I would think that would be the better purchase.

I just bought one the other day and they seem like a very nice card. Of course, Im an Nvidia guy. I just cant let the past go for me and ATI. Its a love/hate relationship

I think this is the one I bought.

eVGA, IMHO, is one of the best Nvidia makers out there.

I was going to ask about your system and if it can properly handle a newer video card, as you dont want it to bottleneck it, but nevermind

well its a asus mobo 1156 socket and fitted with i5 750 default as well as a corsair tx650. Thats alright i presume. (currently got a gtx260 running).

AMD still have 2 cards to be released, 6970 (I assume to fill the gap between 5870 & 5970) & 6990 (I assume to surpass the 5970).

Its all great for me as the 5870 prices are dropping. My 5870 Vapor-x has already dropped £30.

Here is a chart with a leaked benchmark of the 6970. It could be completely bogus, but I think it looks reasonable
