Upgraded monitor, will GFX card cope?

I have been running my 19" 1280x1024 for about 3 years now with my ATi 4870HD coping with it just fine. I have now decided to upgrade my monitor to a new 24" widescreen HD LED monitor and i hope to run it at around 1920x1080p, however i was just wondering if my GFX card is up to the job as i have honestly no idea.

Will i still be able to max out my current games at that resolution or will it create significant stress on the card?

    Any help appreciated, thanks.

I use two 4850 in CF to run my games at 1650 X 1080. I get good FPS and lots of eyecandy, but based on that I would say that you need another 4870. After all, you are almost doubling the number of pixels.

512 or 1 gig on the video card. when i went form 4870 512mb to a 5770 1gig card I noticed a differences. the performance of a 4870 and the 5770 are pretty much the same.

        Its the 1gig version.

I can always run my games at a lower resolution it would just be nice to run them at around the 1080p side of things.

I think you will be fine. I ran a 22' at full resolution and had great FPS on an older non-sli Nvidia card. The 4870 was far newer than the one I was running.

I know its Nvidia and they are far superior than the ATI cards, but it should manage

Well, you can always upgrade later, so it makes sense to wait and see.
I doubt that you will be running new games at all high 60 FPS, but eyecandy isnt everything.

I dunno about that, looking at the "new" graphics shown in MOH and the upcoming Black Ops i think i could still revert back to my old card and do ok :/

You know how it is. Each time you think you can run the newest games in highest setting, someone has to raise the bar:
