    rate this rig

this was a setup i just cooked up and was looking at on newegg to get:

    Antec 1200 Case

    core i7 920 w. Zalman 120mm cooler
    Asus P6T6 Revolution Mobo
    HD5870 1GB
    OCZ Gold 6GB DDR3 1600
    VelociRaptor 300GB @ 10,000rpm
    Win7 64 bit
    Lite On cd/dvd burner
    Antec 750w psu

    ??

what is the longevity of this build? such as will it be able to cream most any game for at least 3 years?

should i get a smaller cheaper case?

is there a different motherboard/RAM/cpu/gpu combo that you might recommend instead?

    budget = below $2000

    thanks for advice

    Re: rate this rig

I can see you haven't got any qualified response, so you will have to do with my opinion:

A smaller and cheaper case: I would say "No". The case is likely to outlive your other hardware by several generations, and is one of the few components that isn't obsolete the moment you open the box.
And a fullsize tower is really nice to work with compared to some of the more cramped designs.

I doubt any decently prized build will be able to "cream" games three years in the future, but the ability to add another 5870 in crossfire later may help with that, so make sure that your PSU can handle that.

I think that should last you awhile. I was actually planning on building a rig similar to this myself. Only difference is that I would get a PX58D Premium from ASUS and I would also wait until the gtx480 comes out. But then again I think the rig you showed is fine as well.

High end core 2 quad isn't that bad compared to low end Core i7. Given the amount of money, I'd suggest you to get a C2Q 9550, and use the rest $1700 to get some expensive stuff, such as MSAR STG-556 or Ruger SR-556.

          Or buy a katana instead.

i dont need rifles or swords i want computer parts. i already have a good handgun anyways.

i was looking at this motherboard

and i realized that i am not going to tri-SLI or even regular SLI anything. i am most likely just going to use the 1 good gpu that i got. probably the 5870. maybe i could save some money on the board and get something else that would allow for easy, stable overclocking without all the SLI junk instead

the main thing with the motherboard is i am not informed and dont know what would be the best choice in terms of how my chosen cpu, ram and mobo work together. like i dont want to be a bigger sucker than i already am and waste money and resources on a clunky hardware combo that doesnt have a good price to performance ratio if you see what i mean.

Don't get anything with NF200 with it. Especially when you want to use 5870. Even if you plan to use SLI, you still don't want NF200. That thing only slows down with more latency. Unless you need to do very intensive calculation using CUDA program, you don't need NF200.

              Get this instead:

And, yes, you do need a rifle. If you don't want a sword, at least get a large survival knife or a machete.

k this is what i have been cooking up

                core i7 920 w. Zalman 120mm cooler
                Asus P6X58D
                ATI 5870
                6GB Corsair Dominator DDR3
                Raptor 300GB HDD
                X-Fi Prelude sound card
                Antec 750w psu
                Win7 64 bit

yeah im mainly waffling over the motherboard but really all i need is something easy and reliable that is going to let me overclock a bit without getting all butt-hurt

so the ASUS P6T X58 compared to the P6 X58D

in your better informed opinion, someone like me who is not going to sli, RAID or any wierd stuff would be better off just getting the one that you suggested as opposed to the board that is on my current list? yes i am trying to figure out what would be best to get also but i enjoy your help alot

oh i see. nf200 is some deal that helps with multiple gpu configurations. yeah k i see what you mean.

Zalman coolers aren't the best around, and usually pretty noisy. There was a time when they dominated, but get a Noctua one instead. Noctua is pricy, but you won't regret when you clock it back and just want a quiet rig. I know you are anal about sound, so you should be looking at how do build a quiet rig, not an overclocking fan monster.

Also, unless you got to have USB 3.0, I don't see much point to pay extra $60. P6X58D does seem to have better built quality. Don't get Raptor. TB size hard drive would be much better choice.

Which Antec PSU are you looking at? Some of their older ones have minor glitches, but newer ones are generally good enough.

For that price you can consider this as well.

You sold your last rig? I remember that was a well-built one in 2008.

havent sold it yet. i was sayin i was gonna sell it later after i know my new one isnt gonna blow up or nothin

my brother came over a few days ago and grabbed my old dell 5150 that i had sitting in the closet not being used. THAT was my first computer and it was bad. but then the dude that wants it isnt running anything demanding at all i dont think i just had a 7900gs gpu and some funky little sound blaster audigy card in it as well as a slightly larger psu

that psu you mentioned above is actually the one i have in this comp right now i just figured id get something different, that and it has blue LEDs' ''oooh ahh''

hmmm edit. actually i think i will go with the corsair psu like you suggested.

my concience and wallet say 'dont be stupid, start a savings account instead.'

if i wasnt getting a nice tax return or money from selling the Dell and my current comp i would 99% not get this setup here.
