    Gtx 480!!!

Have you heard the news? Nvidia has announced on twitter and facebook that the new GF100 cards will be named the gtx470 and gtx480! Anyone here planning on getting these? I am currently waiting although the ATi cards do look appealing I am trying to refrain from buying one. What do you think is going to happen to these new cards? Do you think it will be worth the wait?

Dont know about nVidia now.. the NDA ended a few weeks ago for Fermi and theres been no benchmarks on top of that a few of the new cards are supposed to be released next month, and to add something else to the mix ATi will more than likely have some refresher cards on the way.

Not until the price drops under $200. There is utterly no point to shed $649 or even more to get something that will decline in value just in a couple of years. Always buy hardware less than $200 per component.

          Re: Gtx 480!!!

It sounds like a complete failure, if you believe this article: http://www.semiaccurate.com/2010/02/...and-unfixable/

Fermi GF100 is six months late and slipping, can't be made profitably if it can be made at all, and initial production is going to be limited to essentially a PR stunt. Every card made will be sold at a huge loss, meaning that there will probably not be any more wafers run after the initial 9,000 risk wafers are used up. Those were paid for in advance, so there is little harm to finishing them for a stopgap PR stunt.

The chip is unworkable, unmanufacturable, and unfixable. If Nvidia management has any semblance of engineering sense, it will declare its usual victory with Fermi and focus resources on Fermi II, something it is still promising for 2010. The changes needed to fix the first Fermi are basically not doable until the chip is shrunk to 28nm, the size is just too big.

            Re: Gtx 480!!!

No reason to have those "!!!" in this thread. NVIDIA has completely failed, and can no longer compete with ATi cards for gaming benchmarks in performance, or price.

NVIDIA HAS BEEN hinting about the performance of its upcoming GTX480 cards, and several of our moles got a lot of hands on time with a few cards recently. If you are waiting for killer results from the 'puppy', prepare for severe disappointment.
On the GTX470 side, there are 448 shaders, and the clocks are set at 625MHz and 1250MHz in both cases. If the GTX480 is really at 600Mhz and 1200MHz, and the GTX470 is slightly faster, it should really make you wonder about the thermals of the chip. Remember when we said that the GF100 GTX480 chip was having problems with transistors at minimal voltages? Basically Nvidia has to crank the voltages beyond what it wanted to keep borderline transistors from flaking out. The problem is that this creates heat, and a lot of it. Both of our sources said that their cards were smoking hot. One said they measured it at 70C at idle on the 2D clock.
If potential buyers get a wide range of benchmarks and correct specs, the conclusion will likely be that the GTX480 equals the HD5870 in performance. There will be no reviews based upon cards purchased in the wild for months. The way Nvidia has dealt with this in the past has been to control who gets access to cards and to hand pick the ones sent out.
The end result is that the GTX480 is simply not fast enough to deliver a resounding win in anything but the most contrived benchmark scenarios. It is well within range of a mildly upclocked HD5870, which is something that ATI can do pretty much on a whim. The GTX480 can barely beat the second fastest ATI card, and it doesn't have a chance at the top.
            Let's conclude, shall we?

GTX480 is too hot, too big, too slow, and lacks anything that would recommend it over a HD5870, much less the vastly faster HD5970. Nvidia is said to be producing only 5,000 to 8,000 of these cards, and it will lose money on each one. The architecture is wrong, and that is unfixable.

Patton let me start off by saying that your argument is flawed. Here is why:

              1. Unsubstantiated rumors from "Semiaccurate.com". Seriously? This guy is paid by AMD to spread false information about Nvidia. Just look at the site. By the way this is the same guy who said that the GTX280 would fail and made the prediction that Vista would make Microsoft go out of business.

              2. If Nvidia has not announced any information about these cards, then how did he manage to get his hands on this information? Simple, he lied.

              3. The main point is that Nvidia has not released any specifications on the card so we cannot judge it based on rumors.

That is why I believe your argument is flawed. I am part of the EVGA forums and I would know since everyone there is tech-savvy on Nvidia and they all agree that Semiaccurate.com is indeed an unreliable source.

Oh and by the way are you planning to upgrade your own vid card soon or are you fine with what you have? I think your rig could use DX11 card then it would be perfect. PREPARE FOR NVIDIA NVASION!!!

A little earlier this month, NVIDIA tweeted that it would formally unveil the GeForce GTX 400 series graphics cards, NVIDIA's DirectX 11 generation GPUs, at the PAX East gaming event in Boston (MA), United States, on the 26th of March. That's a little under a month's time from now. In its run up, sources that have access to samples of the graphics cards seem to be drawing their "performance expectations" among other details tricking in.

Both the GeForce GTX 480 and GTX 470 graphics cards are based on NVIDIA's GF100 silicon, which physically packs 512 CUDA cores, 16 geometry units, 64 TMUs, 48 ROPs, and a 384-bit GDDR5 memory interface. While the GTX 480 is a full-featured part, the GTX 470 is slightly watered-down, with probably 448 or 480 CUDA cores enabled, and a slightly narrower memory interface, probably 320-bit GDDR5. Sources tell DonanimHaber that the GeForce GTX 470 performs somewhere between the ATI Radeon HD 5850 and Radeon HD 5870. This part is said to have a power draw of 300W. The GeForce GTX 480, on the other hand, is expected to perform on-par with the GeForce GTX 295 - at least in existing (present-generation) applications.
A recent listing by an online store for a pre-order, put the GTX 480 at US $699.
                GTX 480 at US $699
                GTX 470 at US $499

Theres no way Im getting a card that draws 300w at idle,

                  Yep, I'll be going with Crossfire 5870's or 1 5970. Haven't decided yet. :)

Ive owned nvidia my whole life (Except back in the VooDoo days), but they've tanked the GTX 400 series though.

I'm over on tech-forums.net, I know Charlie is pro-AMD but he has no reason to lie, just not show any positive about the card.

Same here. I usually get the second-tier cards. I got the 7800GT instead of the GTX. Then I got the 8800GTS instead of the GTX. Now I have a GTX 280. I'm going to hold for a while until some really compelling reason to get DX11 support emerges.

Whilst navigating through the tech-filled halls at CeBIT 2010, keen to spot NVIDIA's next-generation graphics architecture, we were told that board partners would be wheeling in the high-end GTX 480 card in closed PCs, limiting the press' chances of getting hands-on with the GPU that's due to launch on March 26th.

As the launch draws near, NVIDIA's partners are busy readying retail boxes.

One such partner - and we confess that the name hadn't crossed our radar too many times before - is Colorful.

NVIDIA remains tight-lipped over the card's specifications, but we can confirm from the box that it will have 1,536MB of GDDR5 memory.

The rear outputs will comprise of twin dual-link DVI-I connectors and a mini-HDMI port (v1.3a). No provision for DisplayPort, then?

The power requirements are such that it needs more juice than twin 6-pin plugs can supply, and the setup is the same as a Radeon HD 5970's.
A chunky PSU is recommended, pitching in at 600W - 42A on the 12V line - for a single-GPU system. Add at least 250W for a second card.
Now all we need is a card to test NVIDIA's claims of upcoming high-end graphics hegemony.
