  • my 8800GTX died. dell gave me a Radeon 4600 series.... 8800=4600?

so my 8800 died on me a few days ago, and i runa biz and so i called dell to send me a new card:cry:. they said they knew wat to send me etc. and they sent me this ATi card.... well yeah basically i do a LOT of video editing, picture editing, and CAD. and my 8800 was barely making it:dead:. dell claims that this ati is a upgrade to my 8800 because they dont have it anymore, but said they would give me a 9500GT if i wanted:shakehead:.

so basically. should i go get the 9500GT? or is both crap compared to my 8800GTX? how do they compare to the 9800 or anything better. price isnt a huge deal to me..

yeah i know itsa dell... but yeah. oh its a xps 420

Insist on something that at least has a 256 bit bus, which is comparable to the broken part. If they don't know what a bus, keep asking for a Dell rep that understands the specifications of the parts that Dell sent you.

If you can get them to send you something with a 256 bit bus, the chances are you'll be looking at an equivalent part, at least. If doing lots of editing, insist on a part with at least as much Vram as the part that broke (864? 1gb? I don't recall on the 8800gtx, and nVidia "reversioned" that part a couple of times iirc).

Use the "compare cards" feature on this site: http://www.gpureview.com
At first glance both cards look inferior to your 8800 GTX

8800 gtx was 600 bucks(top of the line) here back then thats more than a 9800 GT is worth now days!trying to replace something two years old will be difficult! price/worth/inflation!8800= 4870 IMO you dont want to be going backwards here

That's not a problem. Just badger dell until you get someone on the phone who does know, and will acknowledge that you HAD a card with a 256-bit bus, and they sent you one with half the bus width--both of the 'replacement' have 128 bit busses.

Btw, a bus is basically how wide the road is that the information travels on. If the bus isn't wide enough (measured in bits...now ya get the idea?) your data gets stuck waiting on it's turn to go through. Going from 256-bit to 128-bit makes it slower by half all by itself, all other things being equal and the card being the bottleneck. However, they've also stuck you with cards with inferior clock speeds, probably inferior memory size, and an inferior number of vowels (gtx > hd lol, the more x's the better!). Don't use that last bit on the phone, though...

Given that the 8800GT was slightly worse than the 8800GTX and was then rebranded to the 9800GT and then the GTS240, neither of those cards are close to equivalent. Insist on a 9800GTX, GTS250 or Radeon 4850 IMO.

hmm okay thanks that helps a lot. i was about to **** on their face when i first talked with them. all they kept repeating was OH ITS 1GB 1GB im like I DONT CARE. but its not even.

well im ****ed either way. i dont think dell has anything better or they dont wana shell out the cash. ****ing hell.

im thinking between these. if ima pay for another expensive card, i want a bit of an upgrade

or the GTX 2xx series or the Radeon Radeon HD 5xxx series. but idk how it would perform with my processor and whatnot (Q6600@ 2.4GHz, 4 gigs of ram etc.)

Have you considered going for a DX11 card if you are going to upgrade anyway?

indeed. for $400 you can't beat a 5870. that 4890 linked above is very nice, too, for $200 though. if your power supply is up to snuff and the rest of your hardware is able to feed it, i think that's where my budget bucks would go, lol

well would my processor handle it (Q6600 @ 2.4GHz), im guessing since my PS can handle a 8800 it can handle a 5870

Its only 12w more acccording to this: http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards....=474&card2=613
And even if your CPU becomes a bottleneck, its not like it would run faster with a slower card.
Maybe the card will last you until you upgrade your CPU, or you could end up bying a second one for crossfire at that time.
