I am in no rush to upgrade either. As a rule of thumb I expect a new card to double my benchmark score, but my 2 X 4850 will last me for quite a while performance wise.
Tesselation looks very nice, but that alone is not worth the price of a high-end card.

But we will see when prices drop and the new games come out. Isnt BC2 supposed to support DX11?

      BC2 will support DX11.

Prices are high atm due to both a market monopoly but also supply issues.

I'm in no rush either. My specs (9600GT, 3GB RAM, AMD X2 3.1ghz) max all my games out at 1280x1024, 60FPS+ so I'm pretty happy with what I have atm. The newer cards' performance increase (compared to my card) at 1280x1024 isn't enough to warrant an upgrade.

I am reading this humongous thread on the subject: http://www.overclock.net/ati/597046-...vs-dx-9-a.html

Some of them are implying that the DX9 / 10 scenes have been intentionally crippled to promote DX11.
I remember that there was a lot of the same stuff with the DX10 tech demos.

Look at a couple of screenshot from the thread:

And in PCMark was a line that made Intel cpus look faster in the end. Of course everything is promoted as good as possible. The question is how easy it is to develop those features DX11 on DX9 and how good those systems can handle those graphics.

I could try with my 5850, How can i check if my vista has patched to DX11?

yeh i got mine for £198 a few days after release but i see them going for £240 now

For that price you could buy two 4870's which would crush a 58xx

i can see something like this when supply gets sorted out

                5770 - £115
                5850 - £175
                5870 - £275-300
                5970 - £400-450

Should drop some more if Nvidia come up with something better

Try Start -> Run -> dxdiag

on the first tab (System) near the bottom it says "DirectX version". Mine says I've got Direct X 11 installed.

To be honest, it wouldn't surprise me if Nvidia's offering didn't offer that much performance increase in games. In an interview they said 80% of their profit comes from industry products like Quaddro cards.

Id be very suprised if they start to move away from desktop graphics as they own about a 65% share of the market

Usually Quaddro is a spin off to Geforce we might see it being the other way around which would mean that the Nvidia card might be computationally far faster than its competitor but slower in 3D games

It would explain their move into a GPGPU style architecture and continual promotion of CUDA.

                          Here is what i got:

                          two little things i noticed:

fps seemed to drop by 1/2 when the camera zoomed close up on the dragon statue and rooftops

i would not like to run it at 1920x1200

This Dirt2 video is interesting. They've used tessellation to improve flag animations, water effects, and spectators.

I was actually thinking they might step up their game after having their **** kicked by ATI post-8800GT.

It seems companies often get lazy after a few good products and stop pushing so hard to be competitive. Nvidia did that (especially with the 9* series cards). I'm hoping that they will step up their game again.

Why are the two scenes different? The DirectX 11 scene has far more complicated geometry and texture maps (which isn't anything that couldn't be done in DirectX 10), so it's going to run worse than DirectX 10.

For a meaningful comparison, you would need the scenes to be identical.
