GPU's... again ... :s

I made a thread a while back asking for advice about what was the best GPU around at the time as I had enough cash to buy one there and then, I was going towards the 4870 that most of you pointed me towards but seeing the GTX2xx series getting cheaper, I held back from buying and now im stuck in the same dilema, but I am actually going to buy one either way this time :p

Budget is 150 pounds, give or take 20.


This GTX275 - 160 quid.

Most of the benches I looked though led me towards the 275 being better overall? but the 4890 seems to have high clocks.. and now the 57xx are here also im totally lost!

Whilst I don't tend to like saying "hold your money", but in your case I would until January/February. Reason is that Nvidia should have fermi on the market driving down prices and hopefully the manufacturing process will be more efficient.

Also, you may as well get a DX11 card to run DiRt2/Bad Company 2 etc... on Windows 7.

The thing is, 150 or so I assume is not going to get me very far in Jan, its going to be a while before prices come down to that or the ATI current cards fall that low. :\

Im kinda in the same boat, looking to get a new card before BC:BC2 comes but wont have alot to spend, think everyones hoping nvidia will release a half decent card that will reduce Ati prices plus the 5970 is released and should make previous cards a little cheaper.

Im leaning towards a pair of 5770's but will see what the new year brings.

Yeah, after reading this corssfire 5770's might not be a bad idea... Atleast I might buy one now, then wait until more of the range is out and get another hopefully a lot cheaper. But im still not sure :p Not sure if they would even fit in my case!

5770 is roughly equivalent to a 4870 performance wise, and then you get DX11 and lower power consumption. I got one and I can easily say that's it's an awesome price/value card, but if you're only interested in the best performance you should wait.

I would advise against crossfire.

Double the parts = double the 'opportunity' for one to break/be a lemon.

Crossfire and SLI solutions have gotten much better as far as support and scalability, but imho it's an answer for fps phreaks to one-up each other. The dual-chip-on-silicon (effectively "internal" crossfire with shared memory) are the best as far as support goes, but geebers the price!

My advice is to save up and get the best single-gpu solution you can afford. My x800xt IAW lasted me 18 months, so did my x1950xt. The HD 3870 I only kept for a year before upgrading to the 4870, but that decision was heavily affected by alcohol and later caused me to have to promise the missus not to spend any money on computer parts for a long, long, long, long, long...well, it's going to be February before I get a solid state drive...sigh... Lesson: don't go shopping for pc kit whisky in hand.

Having said all that, 4870's should be able to be had dirt cheap and are still extremely fast for the money, or go with what iQue suggested if you're comfortable with the newer tech.

Point taken. I think simply saving and when BC2 comes around just looking for the best GPU near release date is the best course of action then.

Surprised my 8600 has not exploded already :p
