I think my video card is dead

One night I started getting artifacts then BSOD in all games. Sometimes I could ctrl alt del out before the BSOD and check temp - not even close to getting hot. I thought it was a software problem, so I reformatted + clean Win7RC1 64-bit install. After a couple days it returned. I reinstalled again. Tonight it really started getting screwed up. My startup/BIOS screen has artifacts now. I pulled the card out, took off the plastic covering and cleaned the dust out of the heat sink. Problem still there.

It's out of warranty, so any ideas to fix this? Or should I look for a new card? My next upgrade will be a build from scratch, so there's no point in getting something that will be bottle necked by my E6600.

Note: Sorry if this post is incoherent. It's 3:30am and I've been troubleshooting for way too long. :sleepy:

I suspect it's gone. There are probably fixes, but since it's returning despite reinstalling an OS, i guess it's a hardware issue.

What is your budget for a new card?

Probably <$130. I won't be salvaging the card when I build my next comp, since this one will go to a family member.

Now you can try baking the 8800GTS to see if you can fix it.

Search Newegg.com for 4870. Get fast shipping and top-rated customer service.

Too late now, but wouldn't a 4870 have been better than a 4850?

              Just my opinion...

A 4850 1GB would be better than 4870 512mb at this moment and time. Especially given the increasing resolutions and texture heavy games.
