Dell Dimension 5000; PSU or motherboard problem

    Hi all,
My mum was doing some accounts on our Dell Dimension 5000 earlier today, when it suddenly just shut down. When attempting to restart it, the power button instantly flashes amber continuously, but nothing else happens; no diagnostic LEDs, doesn't POST and the fans don't spin up. Upon opening the case the AUX_PWR LED on the motherboard is continuously lit. I'm guessing that either the motherboard or PSU have gone, but need to narrow it down; in the case of the former it'll be a total rebuild, in the latter case I'll just replace the PSU. What do you think?

Can you do some trial and error with another PSU?

I'm looking into the possibility of borrowing one at the moment. Once I can figure out how to get the current one out....

Yea , if you find it's the PSU, it's an easy replacement. If not, I guess it's a new build. Maybe you can recycle the RAM and CPU.

Nah, it's a P4, so not really worth it. I'd recycle the HDDs, DVD drive, graphics card and sound card, and then replace the processor, case (It's a BTX), motherboard, RAM and PSU.

Having tested the PSU, it's dead, so I'll order a new one tomorrow.
