No, I don't have a Linux CD.

What do you mean by "bad Windows install"? Something got corrupted as we were installing Windows?

That, or something's missing/disabled from the registry. This is assuming the operating system install is the problem, though.

I found this. Some guy had the same problem as us, and it appears that he "cleared the CMOS" at the bottom of the page and that fixed the problem.

My question is, what does clearing the CMOS do? does that delete any files or have any other effects? Nothing is over clocked on the computer. Should I follow these instructions?

Try a live linux first before you start messing with the hardware, they are no longer user-hostile.

AFAIK clearing the CMOS will reset the bios to default values, but you should be able to do that from the bios options without messing with jumpers etc. You will of course lose custom settings, but I think it must have been at least a decade since I had a MB that didn't autodetect everything.

But notice that the guy in your link started with burning a new bios. Thats a bit more drastic than just resetting it.

You just download an iso-image and burn it to a CD/DVD, which you boot from.

I am by no means a computer expert, and last time I tried messing with 'images' I found it to be a big pain.

I found an option in the bios that returns the CMOS to default settings. If I try it, will any information be lost? Will it mess around the hard drive in anyway way, or will it just change settings we are not concerned with (with the potential to fix this problem)?

If internet works on Linux LiveCD, it is a software problem on Windows. If it doesn't work, then it is a hardware problem.

If you reset CMOS, all of your BIOS settings (Clock, etc.) will revert to factory. If you have done any overclocking or customizing, you might lose something.

Well, like most issues I come across, it solved itself.

Whether or not it was anything we did, or if it will crap out again, I don't know. But for now it's working.

This is what I've learned: If I have a computer problem, chances are the only fix is to wait it out.

I hate computers.
