Internet not working

The internet on my brother's computer doesn't work, but all other internet connections on the same router work fine.

We've tested the ports, cables, tried switching to a PCI-ethernet card connection, updated motherboard drivers, tried switching internet browsers, but none of them worked.

XFX 680i LT
XFX 8800 GT Alpha Dog Edition
Q6600 @ 2.4 Ghz
Ultra 600w
Corsair 2Gb DDR2
Seagate 250GB
Win XP 32 (Has an identity crisis: supposed to be MCE but thinks it's Professional)
Cable modem + D-link router.

Can other devices on the network connect to the computer? Can the computer connect to other devices on the network?

When uninstalling graphics drivers did you uninstall nvidia ethernet drivers? i have almost done that with my 680iLT?
It's the only thing i can think of/know of

I've tried sticking the ethernet from the modem directly into the computer, and it still didn't work. So it's not a network problem.

Well, You've schooled out anything thats hardware related minus having a faulty motherboard/internet card. So, i would check into that. If you think its software, Run an spyware/anti-virus just for clean-up and then give a call to your provider. They will run some diagnostic tests on your connection after you give them a description of the problem, aswell as most likely schedule a visit. Im betting for a junky female port (where you stick the cord into) on your board.

This probably is a long shot, but did you check to make sure the host file hadn't been screwed with?

Well, what i would do from here is either A. Order a technician to visit your house or B. New Motherboard. Sorry man but, usually when there is problems like this, its a wire or connection problem within the part itself (which cant be fixed)

I would actually install as many apps as possible. I remember I lost Internet for seemingly no reason, but it turned out that a new Zonealarm update had stopped all outgoing and incoming connections.

Took me ages to work that out :p

If the motherboard were the problem, the discrete NIC would have worked. That's clearly not the issue.

From what I have read, it doesnt sound like a hardware issue.

Are you running any antivirus suites like Norton or Trends Micro with IDS or firewalls? If so, try turning it off and see if it starts working.

Also, see if the network works in safe mode with network support. That will rule out a few pieces of software.

Before doing all that though, check and see if you have a static IP address or are getting any address at all. You can click START go to RUN type in CMD and in the black box type IPCONFIG and see if you have any IP addresses other than 169.x.x.x

Only windows firewall was on, and it didn't work with it turned off. Safe mode didn't help either.

We tried running ipconfig, but nothing came up... any ideas?
