Think I might buy this netbook:

It has very good reviews: http://www.testfreaks.com/netbooks/samsung-nc10/. Plus, samsung is usually very good quality parts.

I did want to get a full laptop, but a decent one costs a bit more, and I need something to take to school every day. I don't really have space for a larger laptop since I commute to my college and have to carry a sh!tload of books for my classes as well as my clarinet(s) a few days a week.

Thoughts?

Just so you're aware, don't expect it to be much faster than a tub of molasses. If you're okay with that, though, it should be fine.

Well it runs XP and it's only for doing some school work while at school and email/web browsing. I'm not going to be using this for anything that would be tough on a CPU either. Plus, I can upgrade to 2gb of RAM quite easily after I buy it.

They're quite good, but if you do indeed find yourself using it for school work then be cautious because although you might think 1024x600 isn't that bad, it is kind rubbish if you're running Word 2007.

Plus nothing beats a proper computer mouse in my opinion.

I'll probably just drop my spare backpack in the mouse. I plan to keep using Office 2003, though, since it's what I have on all my other PCs and I don't particularly want to get used to 2007. :p

I'd buy it then! but only if the battery life is good. on my Wind with the stock 3cell 2200mAh battery I only get 2 hours on average. I could buy a better battery but you obviously don't want to be spending much more than you have to on it.

If it's too slow on XP, don't be afraid to go linux. Ubuntu runs great on netbooks, and open office is pretty much identical to Office 2003 personally.

That's what I've heard (and was considering), but I think I'll try adding another GB of RAM (assuming I do buy it) before switching to linux. My desktop runs Vista decently with 2GB of RAM (although I will be upgrading to 4GB pretty soon. :p ) so I figure this would run equally well, even though the processor is inferior.

Number one tip is to uninstall all the crap that comes with the OS preinstalled. I mean, keep it if you find it useful, but many laptop and netbook manufacturers just cram in as much trial software or useless programs in the base install as they possibly can. :p then it should be all smooth.

Upgrade to 2gb ram (You'd see a BIG difference) and uninstall all the crapware as iQue has said. These specs are about the same as my laptop so it should run smooth for note taking and internet browsing. Overall, get it. :)

It's probably not the same as your laptop, spec wise. The CPUs in netbooks are pretty low-end; They're roughly comparable (slightly slower) to the old 900Mhz Celeron M Dothan. However, if all he does is browse the web and take notes, it should get the job done.

my eee 901 has similar specs and running ubuntu is spot on for taking notes in Open Office and browsing with ff/chromer dev build
